    • Bank the cheque.  No doubt it will bounce - but you never know. When it bounces - that is when you are meant to access their website link and enter your personal details - but of course - DON'T.

    • If you are absolutely certain* that you were parked OK, write a letter of complaint to the Headteacher and copy in the Chair of the school governors.   If you or the car were identifiable in any way from the photo (eg visible registration number, driver's face etc) I would very politely write that you resent the untrue suggestion that you had parked/had stopped/were waiting in a way that contravened any traffic regulations, and that you are sure that the school will understand that you would like an apology and a correction to be printed in the next newsletter.  (You can also clearly state that you were identifiable from the photo because other parents have mentioned it to you).   See if that works.   You don't want to go to court for defamation as you'll need access to about £10k in fees before you get out of bed.  You just want an apology and a correction.  If what you've told us is accurate, I don't see any reasonable school failing to say sorry.     *My wife is a former school governor and my experience listening to her is that very very few parents actually understand the meaning of the no stopping/no waiting signs and road markings outside schools.  Don't complain unless you are sure you weren't stopped where you shouldn't have been.
    • And they haven't offered a speed awareness course either?  (Have you done one in the last three years or is this in Scotland?)   And is one of the notices for 34 in a 30?  As Man in the Middle says, that ought to be below the level at which they take action.   (And sorry - I don't want to appear preachy - but...  there don't have to be any warnings or signs or lines on the road to advise you of the presence of speed cameras.  If you get away with an exceptional hardship argument you will need to stick to speed limits in future - whether you know there are cameras there or not.  NB Don't know if this applies to you, but most 30 mph limits are restricted roads with a system of streetlighting and don't even need speed limit signs - you are assumed to know this from the Highway Code).
    • It's up to you if you want to pay £300 you don't owe plus whatever Unicorn Food Tax with no basis in law whatsoever that they will have made up in the Letter Before Claim.   We'd prefer you didn't.   But you have received a LBC so it's make your mind up time.   So please    - post up photos of the signage in the dark that you'll have taken two months ago (post 14)    - post up details of planning permission for their signs you'll have found out after you got onto the council, again two months ago (again post 14)    - also let us know if you agree with Brassnecked's excellent letter or if you'd like to tweak bits depending on what you've found out    - upload the LBC.  Some of them are appallingly drafted and invariably contain Unicorn Food Tax which is all useful extra ammo    - also, where are you living now (post 35) and are you comfortable with legal communications arriving at your parents'?   If you look in our PPC Successes thread at the top of the page, you will see 275 times these cheats have been seen off with their tails between their legs (and all had the same "well known legal companies" (ho! ho!) on hand).  In reality 275 times is a massive underestimate, in all 275 cases there was a "moment of victory" IYSWIM where the PPC were thrashed in court or discontinued a claim or were called off by a supermarket chain, etc., etc.  There will have been at least that number again where they were told to Foxtrot Oscar and then crawled back under their stone.  They are eminently beatable but logically when you're in legal dispute you have to put some graft in to beat the other party.

HOW DO I........?

Internet Forums are not always the easiest thing to navigate, so here is a guide to some of the commands you can use. Some are very basic, some will take a little bit of practice. If you want to practise, don't hesitate to create yourself a thread in the Bear Garden, once confident enough, you can always ask a moderator to delete it for you.

Create a new thread:

Reply to thread:

Click on

reply.gif

You can do that to reply to someone else's thread, or to post an update / query on your own thread.

Alternatively, you can go to the bottom of the page, where there is a “quick reply” box:

Ok, so this is what you should now be seeing:

06.jpg

Let's go through the less obvious buttons.

07.jpg

This is the Hyperlink button, and allows you to post a link without the long

http://consumeractiongroup.... showing. (Note: it works with all http://.... not just the CAG ones!)

Type "This is what I want to say", highlight it, click on createlink.gif, paste your link in the box, click ok.

This is what I want to say should now look like this, and you can of course change colour, font etc, should you wish to do so (to match the rest of a signature, for example).

09.jpg

This does the opposite. You might want to post a quote from another site, but not carry the link. Click on the

unlink.gif, clear the box, click ok. “ This is what I want to say will now look like this: "This is what I want to say".

10.jpg

This is the “Insert e-mail link” button. Type the e-mail address in the box, and it will automatically create the link. People will then be able to click on it to start an e-mail message.

11.jpg

This is the “Insert image” button. Click on it to insert a picture hosted elsewhere, like Photobucket.

12.jpg

This is the “Wrap Quote” button. Click on it, and this: will appear in your post, with the cursor between the 2. Just type your message or paste whatever it was you want to quote and it will then show like this:

13.jpg

14.jpg

This is a drop-down menu for the smilies. “Show all Smilies” will open a separate window with all the smilies available on this forum.

Quote from another post:

Click on

quote.gif in the post you want to quote from, it will automatically open the “reply” box and insert the quote, it will look like this:

This is an example.[/ quote]

Type your reply, and

reply.gif.

It will look like this:

16.jpg

However, sometimes, you might not want to quote the whole post, so you can delete what you want from within the quote marks and only keep what you need, so the end result will look like this:

17.jpg

Multi-quotes:

If you want to reply to more than one post, click on

multiquote_off.gif on each post you want to quote from, it will then turn multiquote_on.gif

On the last post you want to quote from, click on

multiquote_on.gif first then quote.gif.

The end result will look like this:

20.jpg

.

If you change your mind, or have clicked on the wrong post, just click on the multiquote_on.gif again, it will deselect it.

For basic search, just type in the box:

22.jpg

Or for more elaborate search, click on “advanced search”:

23.jpg

Report a post:

We ask all of our users to remain vigilant for any posts which contain the following: Insulting language / swearing, threats of violence, racist comments, potentially libelous wording (i.e. the bank 'stole' my money), posts which show complete reproductions of our templated letters, advertising etc. If you are not sure, please report it and let us decide. You can also use it to report a title that needs changing to **WON** or threads that need merging, or moving.

Click on

report.gif under the username of the post you want to report. Type the reason why you are reporting it. Send.

Say thank you for a useful post:

Click on reputation.gif. A drop-down opens which you click to say “I approve”, underneath, there is a box for a comment. If you leave a comment, please sign your nick, it's always nice to know who's being nice, and the box doesn't show who left the comment otherwise.

The more clicks on scales, the higher the "reputation" of a user (the little green blobs under a username). Site Helpers and Moderators can disable theirs, so the blobs will show as grey. You can still click to say thanks, and it will still register on their user CP.

User CP:

24.jpg

User CP (control panel) gives you access to your own settings.

When you first click on it, this is what you'll see:

25.jpg

These are the thanks of people who clicked on your scales.

Next, are these:

26.jpg

They show the threads to which you have subscribed and which have posts you haven't read yet on them.

Settings & Options:

27.jpg

28.jpg

Most are self-explanatory, except the bottom one, “Miscellaneous Options”. If the Message Editor Interface box doesn't already show it, then change it to “Enhanced Interface – Full WYSIWYG Editing”, it's the setting that allows you to use smilies, quotes, etc... Don't be fooled by the name, WYSIWYG is simply short for “What You See Is What You Get”.

29.jpg

Nothing complicated there, the only thing to remember is this: The maximum size of your custom image must be 80 by 80 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller).

30.jpg

This opens a box which allows you to enter a signature, whatever takes your fancy. Please remember that standard forum rules apply, though, and that links to commercial websites are not allowed. Also bear in mind that minimum post length (# of words) = 100 words and minimum post count before signatures show = 10 Posts.

Your signature will only show 2 times on any one page even if both the above conditions are met. These conditions do not apply to the moderating team.

The others settings are self-explanatory, with tick/untick options.

New posts:

31.jpg

Clicking on this will open the last 5 most recent pages of threads which you haven't read.

Find a post/a thread

Click on the nickname or avatar (picture below nick) of the user whose threads/post you want to find (it can be yourself, if you can't find where you posted).

It opens a screen like this:

35.jpg

Click on either "find all posts by..." or "find all threads by..." and it will take you to that list.

Post a link

It's easier to do this with 2 windows opened, although not necessary.

This is the thread you want to link:

36.jpg

Highlight the

http://... as shown, and copy it. (Ctrl + c, or right click + Copy)

Then, paste it in the post where you want it to go (Ctrl + v, or right click + Paste)

37.jpg

Post reply. The forum software will automatically transform the

http://... into the title of the thread.

38.jpg

If you want to only post the link to one post, not the whole thread, click on the post number:

40.jpg

It opens a new "single post" window:

42.jpg

Highlight, copy and paste the link as previously explained, job done.

Attach Documents

Click on

reply.gif

You will see this, you can use either the paperclip or the "managed attachment":

howto01.jpg

Click on either to see this:

howto02.jpg

Enter the file from your computer or the URL and upload.

Note that the files you can upload are very small, so if you want to post something larger (photos and scanned documents in particular), you are better off uploading them to a free web-hosting site. Photobucket, Flickr, ImageShack and many others, all offer this kind of service, do a search for what suits you best.

To upload from one of those sites (I use Photobucket, so will give example from there):

howto3.jpg

Click once on the bottom link, it will automatically copy the code.

Paste that code into your post, it will look like this:

thSparklyDay-1.gif

You can click on Preview changes before posting to make sure this is what you want (in particular, beware of posting pictures which are so big that they will knock the whole page out of shape to accommodate them, it's very annoying for everybody!)

Post your reply, and there you are:
