Hello,

I have a friend who has sold his house here and is moving abroad (west Europe) next week and has said he intends to more or less cut and run leaving his debts behind.

I have advised against this, as i've heard they can still get you for debts even if you have moved out of the country, but I don't really know fully what i'm talking about.

He said he has about 4 or 5 cards with debts of between £1000 and £5000 on each and never plans on coming back to the UK.

It scares me that these things never just dissapear and could haunt him years down the line. As far as i'm aware there is no time cut off point for this. So potencially it could be 10 years later and he could have to pay debt plus interest and his new home/lifestyle could be at stake to pay it back.

I'm just hoping for some guidance from those more knowledgeable then me that i can pass on to him.

Thanks in advance,

Kay

Just remember if he is in the EU, it is not that hard to find him!

Whilst I am not advocating what he is doing, I do think that you over-estimate most of these firms.

I have had Sky chasing me for a debt that I have never owed them (never had Sky tv, it's never really interested me) as they have me mixed up with another person of the same name.

I have also been mixed up by utility companies and credit card companies.

I would think that the odds of them actually being able to find him even if he moved next door would be quite slim, but then that's just my opinion.
