I have been out of work since October last year and i have been registered with a number of employment agencies. I know i have a very good cv, i have never been sacked from a job and i can get excellent references. So why can't i get a job through an agency? Because they do credit checks and i have a bad credit record!

Can someone tell me if these checks are legal and how it impacts on my ability to do a job.

I wouldn't have thought credit checks had any bearing on this. What kind of job are you hoping to find ? I am trying to change my job at the moment and having a nightmare time !.... it might just be the way it is out there right now.

The only industry that you would have a problem getting a job in if you have a ccj is the Banking industry - purely because they handle money and there is a potential of risk.

I worked for a big American Bank in Dorset and, although I had defaults, I was ok. A fellow worker who had a CCJ but didn't declare it had his contract terminated and escorted off site by security.

Frederickson - CCA Sent 11/4/07 - Lost - Claiming back from post office

Connaught Collections - CCA Sent 11/4/07 - No Agreement - returned to client

Lowell - CCA sent 11/4/07 - No agreement - returned to client

Moorcroft - CCA Sent 11/4/07 - No Agreement - returned to client

Red Castle - CCA Sent 11/4/07 - Copy returned but no T&C's

Robinson Way - CCA Sent 16/5/07

I am an ex-civil servant and am looking for a job in the admin area. I am going to look back at some of the jobs i have applied for, i have a couple of defaults but no ccjs. I have applied for jobs where i have met the criteria but not been put forward or even had any kind of reply. I suspect that agencies are not putting me forward because of this. I avoid jobs with banks 'cos i'm rubbish with numbers.

Funnily enough i spoke to someone who works for job centre and she told me the jobs market is incredibly slow at the moment and to avoid agencies.

Sounds as if they made a moral judgement... a CCJ doesn't mean that a person will de-fraud or steal from a company. Sadly, a little bit of power sometimes gets used by companies in the absence of common sense...

I had the same problem when I was job hunting, some agencies asked for a credit check and I flatly refused on the grounds that I didn't do any work which involved handling money.

I'm now in a finance department and whilst I do changes on payroll I don't handle any money and they weren't interested in my credit rating.

I think it's time to take a stand on the silliness of 'credit checking' for everything.....
