I have just received a letter from a debt collectors regarding a debt of £300 to a bank whom I had an account with back in 1997. They closed my account in 2000 and I have since moved around a lot.

As it has taken them 7 years to get in touch, am I still liable to pay this debt?

The debt is built up from bank charges incurred, which as we all know are unlawful. So, if I am not able to claim back the charges as it has been over 6 years, does the same time limit apply to them?

Just send them a letter disputing the alleged debt and that you owe them nothing.

PUTTING IT IN WRITING & KEEPING COPIES IS A MUST FOR SUCCESS

If you have not acknowledged the debt in writing to the creditor in the past six years, then it is statute-barred. There is a template for this in the Debt section - make sure to include a line at the top of the letter stating: I do not acknowledge any debt to your company.
