I'm looking for help for my brother, but it's from the other side.

He's a plumbing and heating engineer, self employed, and has recently done some work for a bloke who's renting out his house.

The guy wanted a bathroom plumbing in and a landlords certificate, which my brother quoted at £500 inc materials (the suite was supplied by the customer) but he's ended up also fitting a fireplace, and various other bits and pieces which my brother mentioned at the time of being asked to do would be added to the bill.

The final bill ended up being £700, give or take a couple of pound.

The guy has now said he wants to discuss the bill as he does not agree the figures as it is not as quoted. My brother has actually undercharged as the work he has done would normally carry a cost well in excess of £1000.

I've told my brother to simply advise that the bill is the original quote, plus extra for the extra work he was asked to do.

What are his options if he does not get his money?

Is he likely to win in a small claims court?

He has taken photographs of everything he did so that the guy cannot contest the quality of his work.

The problem is, the guy lives about 7 miles away from the house my brother was working in, and my brother does not know the address of his home?

Any help appreciated.

If he has done additional work to that which was quoted he is entitled to charge a reasonable sum for this additional work, and if this is the case I would most definitely fancy his chances in court.

He would, however, need a name and address of the person he would be suing.

I would suggest that he sends a final invoice with a date by which to pay up, or further action is likely to be taken.

Please note I'm not insured in this capacity, so if you need to, do get official legal advice.
