When sending my preliminary request for payment, can I just send copies of my bank statements to the RBS with the charges highlighted or do I actually have to add them up myself?

Yes you need to add them up, use the spreadsheet in vamps' chamber. Send a copy of the spreadsheet to your bank, keep the statements for yourself.
