i have been asked today how a friend of mine should go about asking for all data kept on record by her landlord as she is having a few problems and wants to know everthing thaat is on her file.

 

Can someone tell me what i should tell her and is there any templates i couldprint of for her

she is tennent to a Housing Association

Your friend should write to the Housing Association and make a formal request under the Data Protection Act. No template necessary, just make sure that she uses these "trigger" words: Subject Access Request in accordance with provisions of Data Protection Act. She needs to attach a fee (max £10 Postal Order). It can be short, snappy letter, no explanations or reasons needed.

They have 40 days to comply. There may be coplications if the H.A. responds that they do not hold the data in a "relevant filing system". Come back to us then and we will advise you further.
