Hi, Just wondering if any one can help Ive had the cambelt pulleys and tensioners changed by a local garrage a couple of months ago but ever since I have noticed a strange noise coming from the engine best way I can describe this noise is that I can hear the belt and pulleys turning (rattling) which when ticking over u can hear over the engine and radio which is rather annoying I have been back to the garage only to be told its perfectly normall because of the automatic tensioners but I know the car did not sound like this before the cambelt was done any advice would be appreciated. thanks Phil

Difficult to diagnose a noise from a description but my best guess would be something to do with the covers. If your any where near Sheffield I would have a listen failing that get a second opinion from somebody reputable.

Tensioner shouldn't make a noise so if that's what they say definitely get it investigated before you have a belt failure.

hi men

just a bit of advise if you can, my daughter [17] niavely bought a car of ....yes you.ve guessed it, e-bay, the description was ok for a car of this age [11years peugeot 306] but not honest as we discovered the day after the car was delivered, oils and water all over the drive and it havd not been driven since it arrived the day before. I took it to a local garage and they have listed the many many fault and have stated the car in its present condition unroadworthy,i have a written letter confirming this , it was £860.00. The sale description does not in any way correspond with the truth, i ahve written to the seller [private] and stated exactly how we feel about the situaiton and stated we are waiting for the report, now having the report i am about to send it to the seller an wait a repsonce. Wot do you men think apart from oh my god what a fool, my daughter had no patience to wait for us to help find her a car but it does seem a little harsh to be ripped off well and truely. Any ideas??

Hi

I think that the seller has a duty to describe the product acurately. You appear to have all the evidence to start a court claim to get your money back.

Not sure if Ebay / Paypal can be of assistance, try posting on the quick answer part of the community, there are some really wise peeps on there.

Hi thanks for all you advice but I don't seem to be getting anywhere with the garrage that carried out the work Im still being told it's because of the automatic tensioners and that I should do a 1000 miles for everything to settle down if the noise still persists after this they have said they will strip it down and see whats going on. I carn't really afford to have the work carried out anywhere else so im going to have to do the 1000 miles i just hope the belt does not snap in the mean time !!

So what they are saying is that a brand new car which of course has brand new tensioner pullies sounds like yours when it leaves the showroom and for the first 1000mls - yeh right.

Ask him why you have never heard this on any other car on the road.

thats exactly what I have said to them, Im no longer using the car now (for fear of doing any damage) Im going to give them the choice to either put it right or a refund so I can have it sorted elsewhere, I wouldan't mind but this is the garage that I have always had my car's worked on never had any problems with them before, Phil

tensioners are not noisey and this is rubbish what they are saying, the tensioner could be colapsing or an idler pully could be colapsing or water pump, driving is not recomended, you could however follw a simple step to try and determine if the noise is coming from within the cambelt area.

find yourself a reasonably long screwdriver (any one will do) place the top of the handle firmly against your ear and then with the engine running place the tip of the screwdriver on the top of the cambelt cover ( this will amplfy the sound in much the same way as a doctors stethoscope so you can hear whats happening internally) by placing this at different points around the engine (dont go putting by turning pullies or belts) you can dermine exactley where the noise comes from, if its definately within the cambelt housing do not run the engine anymore and have the car recovered to a gargae for repair

Sorry to hijack, but why do you need to have the water pump changed at the same time as the cambelt?

The water pump is driven of the cam belt so if the car has done reasonably high mileage it is often a good idea to replace the water pump at the same time because a pump failure would cause the belt to fail giving you one big bill.

Manufacturers don't give any recommendations for this and some people say it's not necessary really a mater of personal choice. Just remember the manufacturer has an interest in it failing as long as it's out of warranty and as for making a decision about replacing are you a gambler?

Should have mentioned not all cars have the water pump driven of the cam belt but in this case it does.

It is also a good idea to have the serpentine belt replaced at the same time (this is the flat grooved type of fan belt) as I have seen these on several occasions start to brake up into long thin strips these then wrap around the bottom pulley push there way under the cam belt cover and fetch the cam belt of. Result another big bill.
