Hi I hope someone can help. 15 days ago i had an interview with my current employer for a new post within the company. I was told it would take until this week before i heard anything. Last night i was phoned at home by a co-worker in the department concerned to say that he had been called into meeting to tell the department, that no-one had got the job that i was after as no-one had 'stood out at interview' and that they were re-organising the department from within and promoting three members of their team. (without interview).

My point is should they not have informed the interviewees by letter before making this information public knowledge throughout the factory?

Also can they then redefine the criteria and appoint without interview?

I hope you can all help me as i am now in work and fuming.

It is extremely discourteous, but sadly, not unlawful

Yes

However, You are allowed to ask for feedback on your interview and where you fell down.

Also if they are ISO etc audited they should have a staff development policy in place.

Then request training that would allow you to get to the position thast you want.

Is it a large company or like so many of Norn Iron companies family owned?

(not that I would suggest that we are backward or anything , but you know the mentality of a lot of these owners, they are still in the dark ages regarding fair employment, women , pay , conditions, the fact that it is a job , not your whole life, overtime , holidays, pay rises, loyalty etc etc)

Not that I'm talking from personal experience or anything.........lol

The job wouldn't be an engineering factory based in Lisburn by any chance? lol

This is an old trick that most public service employers use (NHS, Council etc). In their case most jobs have already been earmarked for someone else and they just interview people to cover the legalities even though the people being interviewed have zero chance of getting the job
