Dave, is the disc intact? You may be able to get some of the data off if you go and see a specialist. Even PC World may be able to help.

Happened to me a few years ago so I bought a spare hard drive and try to get stuff backed up each week (when I remember!).

DON'T take it to PCWorld as they WILL junk you HDD !!!

Monty has a good idea, you MAY be able to run the old drive as a slave and take the data off it, otherwise there are a number of specialist firms out there.

Be VERY careful whose advice you listen too

. In the end I purchased some inexpensive call blocking software which basically hangs the phone up on them, as soon as it detects their number! :p;) The beauty of this is that I now have a comprehensive call log of their stupid phone calls.

It depends on what operating system your phone has, I have an SPV M700 which is PDA phone running Window Mobile 5. The utility in question is called Call Block and it only cost me around $10. I bought it from the Amercian website for Handango - Handango - Windows Mobile, Palm OS, BlackBerry and Symbian Smartphone Software Downloads. It allows me to create a blacklist of numbers which is stored on the phone. It gives the option to answer then hang up or to just hang up straight away! I set mine to hang up straight away, so they just got my voicemail each and every time. :p

There is a similar software for phones running Symbian, Blackberry, Palm OS. I was driven to these lengths as my service provider Orange informed me that they couldn't block specific numbers to my phone. Being the geek I am, I knew that there had to be specific software that could deal with this. Depending on the software you purchase, you can go as far as blocking unwanted SMS messages, creating whitelists and blacklists for numbers etc.

It's been a revelation for me I can tell you. :D

NO.....

It was a bad crash.... It's all gone! Thx for suggesting though... :|

Dave have you tried the professional recovery route though? Just because a HDD appears to have no data it doesn't mean that it doesn't. Usually data is recoverable even after a drive is wiped due to its failure, power surge etc.

Do you need a recommendation?

LOL! I guess I should spread that one round the forum. :p;)

I still don't quite know how the bar stewards got hold on my mobile number. Prior to this I used to get text messages which I also ignored.

I am registered with the UK and US Handango sites. I buy from either depending on the rate when I do conversions to see which site is cheaper. There's usually not a lot in it, but I have to watch my pennies so every little helps.:)

Glad I could be of some help.

Despite being a Handango customer (for my Palm) for ages, I didn't realise they also had Symbian software. A quick look reveals that there are quite a few call blockers available for my N95. Just what I need.

Spread the word!

@ Diskmandave. Take the advice above mate. Get your hard drive down to a decent computer repair center (The little backstreet ones are generally best as the process is time consuming but in most cases most def can be done.). Other than that you can have a go yourself (if your patient and computer literate). To do this you should install a brand new HD and put your faulty one onto ide 2 or sata 2 if it is a sata. So in effect you have your new windows on your new HD and you have your old HD on (port 2 ie IDE 2) using some good recovery software (just google for it these plenty) you should be able to retrieve most of your lost data). Remember the police and security services have to do this every day.......

Good luck with it all though.

Diddy Vrs Clarity - Clarity have produced CCA on behalf of EGG CC

Diddy Vrs Woolwich - I am at stage 2 (recieved shcedule of charges applied to account)

Diddy Vrs Buchanan clark & Wells - sent CCA request, not yet complied.

Mission is to end the year 2007 as level - dont want to owe or be owed by then

Dave .... how about contacting Reka on the Abbey forum, he seems to know a fair bit about computers and helped one of the Abbey reclaimers when their HDD went belly up.

Just a thought.

Glad you're back with us.

Tricia.

Thx for all the suggestions.... I've started again from scratch though...

Just got a whole stack of system discs to do and should back to somewhere near normal, not going to get anything much done tonight now though, sick of the sight of the damn thing!

Just to update... 2 calls today...

1) Housephone... "Can I speak to DMD at xYz address please?!" Sneaky!

-- "Speaking but i'm not confirming any private details on the 'phone".

-- "What's the reason for that?"

-- "Data Protection"

-- cLuNk!

2) Mobile 'phone... Same as (1) but the guy sounded like he really really wanted a fight, so just answered "can't confirm" to all his questions 'til he got really wound up & slammed the 'phone down! Think i've spoken to him before on the infamous long quoted telecon that I posted ages ago.

Ohh well, look forward to tomorrow...!

NO.....

It never goes completely even if you format the disc. you might not be able to see it at the moment but there are programs that can re-enstate it, search for files in any formatt.

Say the word and I'm pretty sure I can email you a zipfile with a program that if used via another pc can pull up all your lost files.

Great thread by the way! I can't wait to use the "Cease- you are about to break the data protection act" that another poster on this thread wrote about!!!
