Hi Chaps

I need some guidance.

I had a barclays account which I closed in 2002. I cannot find details of the account. I Sent barclays a letter 14th September and 2nd October. They first sent me a hand written comp slip saying "can’t find account" (and nothing else, not even a contact name) and then didn’t reply to the second letter.

2001 was my first year of university and I know I had a few hundred quid of charges which I want to claim back. However, with me not being able to locate the account, and barclays being unhelpful as ever, I'm a bit stuck as to what to do.

I know the address I had on the account when I opened it (my old home address) but I then moved into uni digs, and changed my address with barclays to my new address. The uni campus has since been demolished so I cannot even get the old postcode from royal mail.

Firstly, when I ask for a list of charges, can I ask for 6 years from the date of my first letter 14th September).

Secondly, how do I go about finding the details of this closed account if Barclays continue to be so obtuse? I've sent them a letter today reminding them of their obligations under the Data Protection Act, and reminded them of the 40 day time limit. Given that the 40 day limit is already far exceeded, its fair to assume that the threat of the Act hasn't prompted them. I know via Moneysavingexpert.com of sites that can locate dormant (but still open) accounts, but since mine is closed, I'm not sure what my next plan of action is.

Many thanks for any suggestions and guidance.

If not resend using the template and enclosing the fee. Also confirm your address when where you lived when you had the account and encloe a recent original utility bill or siilar for proof of your id.

Hi, Blue Snail here,

I am considering a claim on a barclays account which I closed about 3 years ago, I havent kept the statements but I have the letter they sent me when I closed the account with all the details on it. This is just a thought I had while I was looking for the aforementioned letter - If you get a credit referance from equifax does in not have the account details on there ? I'm not sure but I think they only cost £ 2.50 or something so its worth doing every so often anyway.

Good luck with the claim.

Hi Chaps

After 4 months and 5 letters I finally got a response from barclays, so I am looking forward to some statements.

However, is there any problem / different method with the account having been closed some 4 years ago?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
