I miss calculated my Nationwide credit card bill last moth and there was not enough funds in my IF current account to cover the direct debit (alas it was all in the savings account). IF have decided to charge me £30 for returning my direct debit. I’m hopping mad about this and I’ve got half a mind to try claim in back.

I’ve never done anything like this before, and I’m mindful that it’s a small amount so it wont be worth it financially (going to small claims costs about £30 I understand) or in terms of time. But I’d still like to have ago because it’s a useful learning experience and it helps clog up IF’s system with more claims.

. What do people think? Am I wasting my time?

No you are not wasting your time, however i would personally phone them first and remind them it is unlawfull and it was a one off, and that you wish it back or you may proceed through the courts to have this returned, they may return it without any further action required.

Having worked for Bank of Scotland, I can tell you that it's the practice (or used to be) to refund the first charge as "a gesture of goodwill" (ah ha ha ha). If you phone or write to them they'll likely refund this charge but tell you that it won't happen again blah blah blah.

A+L - £950 settled in full.

Bank of Scotland - MCOL filed 9 Jan for £1500

Bank of Scotland (for parents) - £5000 settled in full October 06

Bank of Scotland (mum's account) £1900 settled in full November 06

Intelligent Finance: DPA non compliance sent 26 Jan
