Labour overturned huge Tory majorities to win in Kingswood and Wellingborough, meaning the Conservatives have now suffered the most byelection defeats of any government since the 1960s.

Right wing-nuts try to blame Sunak for failures driven by the right wing-nut minority in the party and will no doubt press for Truss and Johnsons return

The Graun has an article saying that One Nation Tories are trying to tell Sunak that a further lurch to the right would be politically disastrous. But I suspect party management are so panicked about Reform that they won't listen.

Bonkers

They are worried about reform - who will be lucky to get 12% of the vote - and the people who would support the wing-nut end of the cons whos policies and 'efforts are a large part of what has gotten the Cons into this position.

Really aren't deasling with their own reverse-Corbyn moment at all well are they?

Mind you, starmers little better with his pandering to hard brexit and right wing voters who will never vote for liberal labour in a million years - all hes doing is antagonising the actual labour base.

(and I'm NOT referring to the fiscal responsibility bits - thats just annoying the remnants of the loony left)

Mind you, even Tory lite is better than tory right. and Tory (if there are any left sic)) better than right wing nuts.

'The rebranded UKIP/Brexit/Reformatory/dephorm/lie their socks off Party, led by Richard Tice and co-founded by Nigel Farage, has been labelled 'the party of the unwoke crass in demonstrating it is not the real home of Labour supporters or Tory supporters or anyone much at all really, and made even the collapsed Tory vote look impressive in comparison.

With its expected high turnout of its own fanatical rabid supporters and low turnout of Tory supporters (as there is no one for them to vote for anymore) the UKIP/Brexit/Reformatory party achieved ... between 5-10% of the vote in the two by-elections - which would equate to about 2-5% of a high turnout vote.

Commenters across the nation were laughing their socks off

There were rumors that Farage was overhead to mutter:  fate really does repeat itself, thank god I didn't stand.

One in four care workers abusing UK visa rules, according to the Times.

The article also says that the chief inspector of borders and immigration isn't being replaced in March, so the planned implementation of the Rwanda policy won't be independently supervised.

David Neal the chief inspector, has submitted 13 reports to the Home Office that have not been published by them.

err HB, isnt this about home office failures and seemingly trafficking level fiddlers rather than care workers abusing the system?

Quite a distinction

"

Home Office’s handling of the social care visa route since it was introduced two years ago to help plug chronic labour shortages in the industry.
He found that the Home Office had issued 275 visas to a care home that did not exist and 1,234 to a company that stated it had only four staff when given a license to operate."

as you say - "one of 13 reports that he has submitted in the past year that remain unpublished by the Home Office""

and

"Senior Home Office sources said that his successor would not be appointed for between six and nine months, meaning that the Home Office will have no independent oversight over its implementation of the Rwanda scheme."

.. so its about not wanting oversight

Ofcom launches investigation into whether Rishi Sunak's People's Forum Q&A on GB News broke impartiality rules

Ofcom has announced that it has launched an investigation into whether the GB News People’s Forum event with Rishi Sunak last week broke impartiality rules. It says:

We have received around 500 complaints about the programme which aired on GB News on 12 February 2024.

We are investigating under Rules 5.11 and 5.12 of the Broadcasting Code which provide additional due impartiality requirements for programmes dealing with matters of major political controversy and major matters relating to current public policy. Specifically, Rules 5.11 and 5.12 require that an appropriately wide range of significant views must be included and given due weight in such programmes, or in clearly linked and timely programmes.

The show has been criticised because Sunak was not subject to the sort of comeback and challenge during the Q&A that he would get from a similar event staged by an established broadcaster like the BBC or Sky News. In his sketch, John Crace wrote: “Nearly every Conservative MP has their own show on GB News, so it was only a matter of time before it was Rishi Sunak’s turn.”

GB News has been found to have broken Ofcom rules at least five times, and other complaints are outstanding, but that has not stopped commentators arguing that the regulator should be doing a lot more to ensure it maintains conventional impartiality standards. Jane Martinson made this case last week.

Headteachers, and staff they authorise, have a statutory power to search a pupil or their possessions where they have reasonable grounds to suspect that the pupil may have a prohibited item or any other item that the school rules identify as an item which may be searched for.

While we wait for @theoldrougeto do something as simple as condemn those who trade in racist, bigoted and antisemitic rhetoric ... and those like Trump and Tatler green who support these bigots and their message ...

"In most of the economic cycles of the past century, robust growth has typically followed each period of recession, as households and businesses get back on their feet after each setback. But as highlighted by Matt Whittaker of the Pro Bono Economics thinktank, the past two decades have been different. Gross domestic product per capita has either fallen or flatlined for the past seven quarters, and it is now 16 years since the last sustained uptick came to an end.

... Remind me, how long have the Tories been running the economy?
