Does Non Payment Policy Cancellation Mean I Have To Tick Cancelled Insurance Box When Getting Vehicle Insurance

My bike insurance has been cancelled due to MCE moving to a new card payment system and I had covid during the period they tried to contact me to update my card details onto the new card payment system. And now I have a void insurance mark against me.


I have looked at insurance prices for a motorbike with the void insurance box ticked and now it’s double what I’m Getting quoted before I had the void insurance mark.


This seems to be a bit excessive for a single mis payment error now I have to deal with a void insurance mark against me.


I have phoned MCE up twice and they have said they can’t do anything and can’t reinstate the policy, they have also taken a default payment twice. 


Is there anything I can do to fix the void insurance mark against me?  


Also the emails for the card update went into my spam folder and I saw them by chance.

When was your bike policy due for renewal? 


Did MCE contact you and tell you that because they had not received payment they were not going to renew the policy? Was that an email that went to your spam folder? It's not their fault if you didn't check your spam folder.


Where have you seen this 'void insurance mark' against you? How do you know there is one?  If MCE offered to renew the policy but you did not take up their offer, ie you didn't pay them the renewal premium, that isn't usually  recorded as the insurer cancelling or voiding the policy. The policy usually just lapses at renewal date in that case.


Is your bike currently uninisured?

I was paying monthly and yes they tried to contact me via email. 


As for the void insurance mark i am assuming that because my policy got cancelled by the insurance company for non payment not due to renewal but due to failing to get my card details, i now assume i have to tick the dreaded cancelled, void etc etc insurance box when i go to get insurance for car and bike.


My bike is insured now with a different insurer.

@12Vader motor insurance policies are normally 12 month contracts. At 'renewal date' the policy automatically expires. Insurers can (and usually do) offer to renew it for another 12 months, and you can decide whether or not to accept their renewal offer. If you don't accept it and you go and insure elsewhere the policy hasn't been cancelled or voided by the insurer. It's just expired because it was not renewed.  So in that situation when are asked by another insurer whether you've ever had a policy cancelled or voided the correct answer is 'No'. 


As I understand it from your post that is the situation for you. It's irrelevant that you would have renewed the policy if you had seen the email. The fact is that you didn't see the email inviting you to renew so you couldn't accept it and nor did you pay the premium. It's also irrelevant that you were paying the premium in monthly installments. 


From what you say I believe your policy was NOT cancelled or voided, it simply expired at renewal because you did not renew it. So this does not need to be disclosed if asked in future whether any insurer has ever cancelled or voided your policy.

I was only 2 months into my monthly insurance payment when they cancelled it so it was not due for renewal. It was due to the fact they had moved to a new payment system and i had failed to provide them my card details for the new payment system.

OK, that is a diferent matter. So they cancelled a policy mid-term, not at renewal date, because of non-payment of a premium installment?


Then you are legally required to record that as a cancellation by the insurer when applying for insurance elsewhere. What I'd recommend is getting quotes disclosing the cancellation then call up the insurers giving you the best premium and explain the circumstances to them. Hopefully they will discount it.

I'm not clear how MCE notified you of the new payment method. How had you been paying the premium - by card? by direct debit to your bank account? What changed? Did they notify you of the change  by post as well as by email? 


If the only way they advised you was by email you might have grounds for a complaint to the Insurance Ombudsman
