I had a store card with GE capital bank about eight years ago. I have tried to obtain records of information relating to charges imposed on my account using the Data Protection Act. They took several months to reply to my request, and when they eventually did they told me they no longer hold the details I want to see because they only keep them for six years. Can they do this? If not, what should be my next step?

They only have to keep the records for six years and are not obliged to keep them any longer. Some companies do but they obviously don't. If you have no records yourself then I don't see what you can do, sorry.

If anything I've said helps you then please feel free to tip my scales!
