Hi

I see everywhere that if you have to work from home for one day you can claim a tax rebate. I have had to complete a training course from home via zoom instead of at work can I claim? I was unsure as its a training course.

Thanks

The finance and accounts team at my place of work alerted us to this, is it the same thing?

If so, it's important to understand it's not a rebate in the sense that you don't end up with cash in your bank, it's an adjustment of tax. In other words, based on your tax rate and the amount of time you claim for, you'll be taxed a smaller amount to compensate for your home working. I think a lot of people have missed that point and expect to be issued with a cheque.

As for whether or not you can claim for doing a course; if you've spent a day working at home, rather than in an office or your normal working environment and you've therefore used your own heating and electricity, you can claim. It doesn't matter what you were actually doing at home, provided it was for work and it took you the day.

For last tax year ending 5th April 2021 or the current tax year ending 5th April 2022 you can claim the tax relief, even if you worked at home for just one day in the relevant tax year.

It's made as an adjustment to your PAYE tax code for the current year, or a claim for the last year to be reviewed with a view to a possible refund.

No apology necessary :-)

If you had to work from home at all due to Covid, you can claim the extra tax allowance.

Follow the link posted above in post #2 and it takes you through the process.

Please update to let us know if you get your tax code updated for this.
