Hi!

After a fairly traumatic letter from First Direct, slamming over £150 of charges on me in the last month, I put my whole overdraft on my credit card and closed my account.

I had tried to negotiate with them, offering to pay off my overdraft in full if they cut me some slack on some of the charges, but the 'drone' on the end of the phone wouldn't do it.

After feeling depressed for the last 24 hours, I remembered reading about this site (on moneysavingexpert.com) so have just registered.

It really would have been better for them to have compromised with me. But now I'm pretty incensed by it all. I'll be starting a claim soon for the last 6 years, then I'm going to make a start on all the other credit cards/accounts I've had too.

I'll also make sure that everybody I know does the same. The more I think about it the more I realise First Direct have done me a favour, if it wasn't for their actions I wouldn't be here today!

I'll enjoy keeping you all updated on my progress!

Hi Volcano and welcome to our forum.

Start by spending a couple of days reading the FAQs and the step by step guide. That will answer most of your questions.

This is a self-help forum so it's important that you do your own homework.

It will make it so much easier for you.

Start your own thread in the First Direct forum and post any questions and progress reports there. You will be able to draw on the experience of others who are also dealing with First Direct.

The Volcano will soon be ready to erupt all over the bank.. :D :D

Regards, Rooster.

Hi Volcano

Have a good read up about the interest side of things too. If it is a credit card your claiming from then Contractual compounded interest will make a big difference on old charges especially. If they charged you say 23%, then claim that back on each charge. The spreadsheets will help you.

Before you start please have a thorough read of the FAQs (there’s a Step by Step guide here too). You should print both of these out to refer to, so as to avoid having to ask basic questions later.

Then look at other threads in your bank’s forum, so as you know what you can expect to happen. You can claim back your charges, and a few are trying for the payback of Early Redemption Charges on loans and Mortgages.

You need to spend 2 or 3 days gradually getting your head round everything. If you find a forum/thread/post of interest, save it in your Favourites, so as you can always find it easily.

There’s a lot to take in, but it’s time well spent and will ensure that you succeed in your claim without problems. Remember it’s not a race, don’t rush, just follow the guidelines one step at a time.

This is a self-help forum and you must be prepared to put in time and effort. It is your claim, your money and you cannot expect others to do all the work for you.

When you feel confident that you understand the process and the various stages involved, start a new thread in your bank’s forum and post your progress and any questions there and you’ll get plenty of help.

All the info to get you started is here:

There are more links below to assist you get around the site.

Good luck

  • 3 weeks later...

UPDATE: 15th December- S.A.R. dispatched.

19th December- Phone call from bank: Asking whether I was making this request because I'd seen 'Watchdog' or another consumer program, "No comment" I said. I was then told that the 'manual intervention' information could take until the middle of January to retrieve. This will still be within the 40 days so I'm not too fussed. He didn't sound too happy though...;)

  • 3 months later...

OK, I've been pretty slack in sending off everything but I finally let fly with the first letter a couple of weeks back......

And I WON!!!!!!

Not that much a victory as they rolled over quickly but I'm really happy!

I got the standard "we're confident that we'd win in court but it's not worth our while" drivel, along with a form to sign basically saying that I'd accept the money in final settlement of the claim. I re-worded the letter to include my own conditions (basically pay up within the next 14 days and I'd agree). Sent off the letter and got a cheque for £310.50 within a couple of days!

It's not a lot considering half of that was [edit] taken off me in a month (which impelled me to claim in the first place) but it has really encouraged me to go after the rest of the gits that have also taken money off me over the years.

Thanks to the above, I'm donating my 5% now (as without this board's help I'd certainly not go ahead with it all!), filling in the suvey and I'm PMing the mods to move this thread to the winning section.

Good luck to you all!

Now Barclays, I'm coming after YOU!!!!
