While I'm here, I thought I'd post an observation/question. It's about a mortgage account, but it could apply to bank accounts too.

I got into difficulty with my mortgage account following an accident and subsequent unemployment. I'd been unable to take out mortgage insurance cover as I was on a fixed-term employment contract.

The situation reached the stage where A&L got a litigation solicitor to write to me. The solicitor referred to A&L as her "client" and stated that her fees would be added to my mortgage account.

I telephone A&L (this was back in October 2006) and asked if this was an independent solicitor or an A&L employee. After a lengthy verbal run-around, I finally found that the litigation solicitor was an A&L employee, in their legal services department.

It seems odd to me that an A&L employee would charge A&L fees for their services. It left me wondering what exactly these "fees" that were being added to my mortgage account were. A&L, of course, weren't forthcoming.

Does anyone have knowledge or experience of this? Does it seem odd, or is it just me being (justifiably?) paranoid? :)

Excellent point wayrest and one I hadn't thought of. I guess they have wages to pay and other overheads, but I wouldn't be surprised if they profit from our difficult times too.

I think I'll move this thread to the Mortgage forum as the folks there may be able to help further on this.
