Wrong gas meter?

Hello all,

 

I hope you can assist me, as I am quite lost and confused at the moment.

 

Two years ago I moved to my actual flat. Throughout this time I have been with EDF first and now EON. When I moved in, my landlord didn't quite know which one was my meter and I picked the one that I believed was mine (now reading you I know I should have done a burner test..). During this time, I have been paying my bills and submitting the numbers that I believed mine, which actually agreed with my consuming patterns.

 

Today, all the meters appeared with numbers, but the one next to the one that I was using, which appeared with a different flat number. As you might have guessed, none of them had my flat number. I have just made the test and it looks like that one may be mine.

 

Now, how should I proceed? I have been paying bills is not like I wanted to avoid paying, but clearly there has been an issue. Could you please advice me on how to proceed?

 

Lastly, in terms of meter serial number, the one that I was using matches my bill and I guess my neighbor bill. The additional doubt I have is, who is paying for my meter and why are they still providing me with gas if no one is paying the one that seems to be my real meter.

why not simply tell you supplier they have the wrong meter number

you been paying for usage , and ofcourse you can view this online too

so its not as if you'll owe anything

you might get a nice surprise and find you are owed a refund.

I think you need to check not just the serial number but what Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) as the MPRN is what is registered and energy supplier go off as well as the serial number.

 

So you need to see what the MPRN is as well as the energy supplier it is registered with.

 

If you look at this Ofgem link: https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/consumers/household-gas-and-electricity-guide/connections-and-moving-home/who-my-gas-or-electricity-supplier

 

In the above link to do this check it gives a link to:

 

Find My Supplier: https://www.findmysupplier.energy/webapp/index.html

(note you may have to complete a captcha, then input your postcode only and click find my address, when the list comes up click on your exact address, you will then see you actual MPRN and the energy supplier linked to your address)

 

With the above make sure and take the details of the MPRN and the Energy Supplier, better still take a screenshot/pdf the webpage.

 

Please let use know if on doing the above it matches your current supplier?

Hello and thank you for the detailed answer.

 

I have checked that website. The MPRN matches with my bill and the gas supplier appears as EON.

Then, out of curiosity I checked my neighbour supplier. I know that they have the electricity with EON based on their smart meter, but their gas supplier is British Gas. I do not know how frequent it is to have different suppliers. Either way, It seems like EON is supplying my flat (based on those numbers), but I still have doubts with regards to which one is my meter and whether I am right when thinking that I am using the wrong meter.

 

Any suggestions  from this point?

Hi! Thanks for the answer. I am afraid I will have to do it. I just want to be certain before going down that road. Additionally, how will they evaluate my consumption if there is no initial reading to estimate from?

well you must have a gas tap by the meter or just inside your flat?

simply turn that off totally and see which meter stops incrementing?

Which one should I turn off then?

Because I might turn off my neighbour's meter.

Isn't that the whole point? To start narrowing down the possibilities. One your neighbour about what you are doing as a matter of courtesy

Well the point is to clarify whether I am using a different meter.

 

In the bills the meter that appears is the one that I am using, but as I said, a different number to my flat number recently appeared in there.

So, the reason why I am concern about this is that new numbers have been written on top of all the meters of the building I live in, but one. The number that appeared on the meter that I use is not the one that corresponds with my flat. Additionally, my flat number does not appear on any meter.

But my consumption now seems to agree with the one that doesn't have any number.

I stopped using any gas and remained fairly constant

fairly? it should stop unless you have a gas pilot light.. and that's tiny use.

@dx100ukIt just moved less than decimals because we briefly used hot water, while the other one increased by 3m^3.

 

So, how should I proceed?

Do I just call EON and make them aware?

How will the charge or refund me if they do not know the initial number for the meter (the one 1 year ago in the meter I should have been reading)?

I had never done it and I was afraid. I have done it now. The meter is mine.

great so everything sort of matches now

a meter with no flat number and one not for your number.

 

now simply write to EON.

i doubt your usage will be that dissimilar to a like flat so you might even get a credit balance
