What happens to debts, i.e. loans etc when someone dies, is it written off or does it pass to next of kin or anyone else?

They come out of the estate after funeral expenses. If there isn't anything left in the estate then they are effectively cancelled. Under no circumstances do they pass to the next of kin (unless the account is jointly held or guaranteed by the next of kin) although some creditors and debt collectors have been known to persuade people that they do.
