Wont improve your credit score Linz...keep it in the bank for a rainy day.....only the passage of 6 years when the default marker falls of will improve your score.

Wait until the markers fall away and then apply for a few basic credit cards that you can easily manage.

I have three current credit cards with smallish balances would I benefit by paying these off?  the defaults are 3 years old (would this still impact massively)

The older a default becomes, the less relevance it has. At 3 years old it’s simply a big waste of hard earned money to pay off .

With the 3 existing CCards, you should always pay the minumum payment on time. That's the most important thing.

But they are actually better as live CCards that you are servicing. As advised above, you will not benefit (re. your credit rating) by paying off those current cards.

Please give something if you can. We all give our time free of charge but the site has bills to pay.
