I am living alone with my 8 year old child and have received my council tax, what entitlements other than '25% discount for single occupancy' am I entitled to?

I know that unemployed people on income support or full time students are entitled to not paying any.

Since I am unemployed I can certainly go this route, however not keen in searching for income support or becoming a student again.

Do let me know what entitlements I may be entitled to.

I have inherited a £120K flat that is fully paid and some money,

£55k in the bank but this will disappear quickly, with daily payments.

advice.

 thanks

Hello and welcome to CAG.

Have you looked at the online calculators to see what you might be entitled to? There's a good one called turn2us, it's anonymous.

The problem I can see you might have is with the lump sum that you've had. Some benefits only apply if you have capital under the threshold figure.

whilst you have more than £6k you are correct.

1. is child benefit same as child tax credit?

1b. read child tax credit to be replaced by:

"Universal Credit

Universal Credit is a new benefit for people of working age. It replaces the six ‘legacy benefits’:

Income Support, Income-based Jobseekers Allowance, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Housing Benefit, Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit."

2. l have been living with my neck in the sand, read l can claim child benefit and child tax credit, https://www.moneyforce.org.uk/Life-and-Family/Children/State-benefits-and-allowances/Child-Benefit-and-tax-credits can this all be done online?

3. will my council tax be reduced more than the modest 25% as a result?

thanks for sharing the knowledge
