I haven't seen very much forthcoming from the government but am posting this with some simple guidance from The Guardian.

This is guidance from the NHS on the most effective way to wash your hands or use the special gels.

HB, the advice for people in their homes and for healthcare workers will be quite different.

 

Homes: handwashing, “cough Hygiene” (and “sneeze hygiene”), and limit contacts with the unwell. Likely people will want to use masks, but ordinary surgical masks won’t do much against small droplets, only larger droplets / secretions.

FFP3 masks offer protection but are more appropriate to the healthcare setting (See below for why)

 

healthcare : expect use of PPE.

Faceshields or goggles, to prevent secretion splashed to the eyes.

Water impervious aprons to protect clothing (to avoid later transfer from clothes to self)
FFP3 masks (the difference being that in the healthcare setting FFP3 users should be ‘fit tested’ so know how to get the mask fitted to them as an individual, and know how to get the mask on and off without contaminating their hands). Gloves will feature, not instead of hand washing, but for getting the FFP3 masks on and off safely, prior to hand washing on mask removal.

(During the SARS episode in Toronto there was a shortage of FFP3 masks. People would re-use masks as there weren’t enough for a fresh one every time. Hence the need to protect oneself on putting on the mask, too.

if there is a similar outbreak of 2019-nCoV, the same limited supplies can be expected.)

Thank you Bazza. My only point with the NHS link was about hand washing and how quite a few of us may not be doing it as effectively as we might.

Coronavirus public information campaign launched across the UK

A UK-wide public information campaign has been launched to advise the public on how to slow the spread of coronavirus and reduce the impact on NHS services.

 

The government-funded campaign will include public health advice on how people can protect themselves from infection.

 

Similar to the ‘Catch it, Bin it, Kill it’ campaign used for flu and norovirus, it will promote important hygiene practices, such as regularly washing hands and always sneezing into a tissue, to stem the spread of viruses.

 

HM Government and NHS-branded information will appear in radio and print media, as well as social media.

“Catch it, Bin it, Kill it” is a previously used Public Heath message (used for ‘flu’ and ‘winter respiratory viruses’)

 

It is a (clear & simple) way to get the message across for “cough hygiene” and “sneeze hygiene”.

 

For sake of clarity, the fact it has been used before isn’t a criticism. It is clear, it is ‘catchy’ and delivers useful, practical advice, that is useful for all the respiratory viruses (in varying levels of success, but still useful for all!).

I can only hope that the combination of the campaign to “seek and prevent” 2019-nCoV, the reducing levels of ‘flu, and the “Catch it, Bin it, Kill it” campaign work against both ‘flu and 2019-nCoV.

 

(A case of co-infection with both fluA and 2019-nCoV remains unlikely, fortunately, if levels of the first are decreasing and of the latter remain low* : another good reason to use a simple effective message against both).
 

* low = close to non-existent in the UK. 2 confirmed cases and no documented person to person transmission, so far.

Coronavirus: Health Secretary's statement to Parliament

The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Matt Hancock updated Parliament on the government's response to coronavirus.

 

Madam Deputy Speaker, with permission, I would like to update the House on the response to the Wuhan coronavirus.

 

I have laid an instrument before the House to confirm the power we have taken to isolate those at risk of spreading the virus, and if necessary to keep them isolated, as part of our belt and braces approach to protecting the public.

 

The powers are proportionate and will help us slow down transmission of the virus and make it easier for NHS and public heath staff to do their jobs.

 

The clinical advice about the risk to the public has not changed and remains moderate.

 

As of today, 8 people in England have tested positive for coronavirus.
