Do you know if that split is age related?  It's the difference between those who those who want to retain as much normality as possible while doing the best we can and the camp which seems to think hunkering down with our eyes closed and fingers in ears will make it all go away.  That latter lot include the sub group which for some unfathomable reason seem to think inflicting as much extra misery as possible on everyone (to no purpose) is the answer.

UK academics: opening of universities was illegal

https://www.theguardian.com/education/2020/oct/24/uk-academics-opening-of-universities-was

"On 21 September, the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) advised the government to introduce immediate measures that would require universities and colleges to move all their teaching online “unless face-to-face teaching is absolutely essential”.

Minutes of the meeting, which were disclosed publicly on 12 October, show that the committee warned that “outbreaks are very likely in universities”, and emphasised that the risk of Covid-19 death and severe disease was higher for university and college workers than for students.

A week after receiving this advice, Williamson reassured MPs about the “safety” of students to return to university campuses"

LOL

Scapegoat Harding for the crap from before this version of trace a test and lie even existed.

No sympathy from me though.

That was surprising HB, but Dido shold never have been there in the first place.  meanwhile that petition in Wales to Senedd about the non essentials ban has 56,500 signatures and rising, but Gething says its staying regardless.

George Monbiot in the Guardian has spoken to a whistleblower who says that teenagers and others on the minimum wage have been told to take on far more responsible roles on test and trace. All that money spent on it and the results aren't good.

Just like is said in BN's link regarding total lack of oversight or proper challenge

"To put this in context, £12bn is more than the entire general practice budget. The total NHS capital spending budget for buildings and equipment is just £7bn. To provide all the children in need with free meals during school holidays between now and next summer term, which the government has dismissed as too expensive, is likely to cost about £120m: in other words, just 1% of the test and trace budget."

Says it all doesn't it

Serco and co given more than the entire NHS capital spending budget to ... fail, miserably

penalties for that - more of the same money for more of the same failures.

7. In March the WHO recommended all countries launch a Track and Trace app

8. Apple and Google developed one and made it freely available to any country. Dozens of countries use it without any issues

9. But the UK decided to build its own “world beating system”

10. Apple and Google said the UK’s approach was impossible

11. 300 app and technology experts condemned the UK plans

12. But the govt ignored that, put the wife of a Tory MP in charge and gave her £11m, almost 3x the average budget for any Track and Trace app worldwide

13. The UK app planned to collect your data, which could be sold to any private business for 20 years

14. The govt promised the App by mid-April

15. Then the govt promised it by Jun 1

16. Then the govt promised it by Sept

17. Then the govt promised it “for the winter”

18. Then it was revealed the govt had asked Apple for access to their proprietary code, to which Apple said no, because the app breached international privacy laws

19. Then the WHO said lock-down measures should not be relaxed until Track and Trace were in place

20. But the UK govt replied that manual track and trace would work fine

21. And then it was revealed the UK's manual track and trace service missed between 30% and 80% of contacts

22. After a trial of the App, a report showed it worked just 4% of the time on Apple devices and missed 25% of connections on Android

23. And then, finally, the govt announced it was abandoning its “world beating system”

24. Matt Hancock said he had long been aware of “technical blocks” in the UK app

25. Then Matt Hancock said we had long been working on both Apps, but didn’t explain why we only tested the one he "knew wouldn’t work" on the Isle of White

26. Matt Hancock said he would now create a “hybrid system”, and had spoken to Apple about it

27. Apple and Google said nobody had spoken to them, and it was still impossible

28. It was reported the UK app developers had tried to block rival apps, and called them “the enemy”

29. It was reported the scripts given to manual contract tracers didn't even match the app

30. MIT Technology Review described the UK’s contact tracing and app development as a "fiasco" and “a masterclass in mismanagement”

There's so much money not accounted for over contracts for PPE, nearly all awarded with no tender process or competition. Jolyon Maugham's Good Law Project is trying to get information.

The Byline Times is digging into it too and has quite a few articles now.

I agree, guys.

Here's an article about NHS test and trace rolling out saliva tests to local public health departments. It doesn't seem to have been thought through and I didn't notice anything in the article about some of the £12bn being passed on to local authorities to help them run this.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/oct/28/10-of-englands-population-could-be-tested-for-covid-19-every-week

'Some local public health directors have dismissed the idea already. One said he would refuse to take part because the tests were “short on scientific backing” and his stretched staff lacked the capacity to deliver at such scale. Another said the lack of any proposed support to track people’s close contacts if they tested positive rendered it pointless.'

There are some significant problems with the accuracy of the saliva tests although they are useful if the process is managed properly - fat chance.

Millions of tests have been 'bought by handcock that are unfit I believe ..

Saliva tests were to be tested on 250000 as detailed higher in thread @ the rate of 250 a day (thats 3 years ...)

- failed and pulled

Then they were going out to schools then somewhere else then ... charged for at heathrow (stanley must want to go to Singapore)

.. then hospitals then ...

ferk knows

How the hell can these people still be in office !!!

We should be docking the fees out of their universal credit for the rest of their unemployable lives after asset stripping them as a down payment on what they owe us.

Jolyon Maugham has got hold of documents that show there were special procurement channels outside the normal process, for 'VIPs' during the epidemic.

He says the Cabinet Office was involved in a lot of this and alleges that the contracts were awarded at inflated prices and that some companies made huge profits paid for by taxpayers' money.

There is much naughtiness going on and Lord Sumption's lecture highlighted a lot of chicanery from UK Gov.  Perhaps Jolyon needs to take a virtual baseball bat to Hancock's bonce?  Snouts i'nt trough.
