Npower has announced a restructure of its UK business that unions warn threatens 4,500 UK jobs and could lead to the closure of call centres.

The energy giant has been struggling for years due to fierce competition in the industry.

The news has been described as a "body blow" by one union official, coming just weeks before Christmas.

Workers will be given details at briefings later on Friday.

Johannes Teyssen, chief executive of Npower's owners E.ON said: "The UK market is currently particularly challenging. We've emphasised repeatedly that we'll take all necessary action to return our business there to consistent profitability.

"For this purpose, we've put together proposals and already begun discussing them with British unions."

And it looks as if most of the job cuts are going to be in the call centres – so all of those people who have spent their time bamboozling and frustrating their customers and now about to get a bit of a taste of Npower for themselves.

Bravo Npower

Energy firm Npower says it plans to reform its business to make it more profitable, putting jobs at risk.

Up to 4,500 jobs could go, the PA newswire reports, citing union sources.

"The UK market is currently particularly challenging," said Johannes Teyssen, chief executive of Npower's owner E.ON.

"We've emphasised repeatedly that we'll take all necessary action to return our business there to consistent profitability."

The plan will see small businesses and consumers served by the same computer systems and customer service teams, said the company.

And of course Npower blame "tough market" conditions.

They don't blame poor management, poor executive decision-making and a sh1tty attitude towards customers
