Weekly signing on?

Hi

 

my brother claims Jobseeker’s Allowance and signed on today and was told by advisor that management have said he’s got to seen him on non signing day as well,so he’s booked to go again next week

 

Are they changing to weekly signings instead of fortnightly?Anyone had this happen or heard anything about weekly signings?

It will be Universal Credit.  Yes for first 13 weeks, it will be weekly appointments.  As this is more than the usual fortnighly appointments,  he can claim for any travel costs such as bus fares for the ones which are additional. He would need to ask Job Centre about this.

 

If he is under 22 years of age, there is a Youth Obligations programme which requires regular appointments over a longer period.

 

This is obviously designed to get people into work as quickly as possible after claiming a benefit.  I would suggest that your Brother looks to take any job they can obtain, even if it is a zero hours contract or limited part time hours per week or casual through an agency. At least then, he is likely to be better off than the less than £10 a day benefit amount and not have to attend a Job Centre every week.

They can mandate weekly appointments for JSA if they don't believe a customer is doing all they can to find work.

 

As above, both UC and new style JSA customers are seen weekly at least for the first 13 weeks and then can be seen either weekly or fortnightly after that.
