Hello,

I have a query about a Capital One Mastercard that I applied for online two weeks ago (I can't remember the exact date).

I was approved and the pin and card arrived a few days later.

I immediately began using the card and made the following transactions over 3 days:

fuel approx. £80.00

online purchase for a rug approx. £80.00

online purchase perfume at Boots approx. £75.00

online purchase candles approx. £15.00

online purchase light fixture approx. £40.00

On evening of Wednesday 23rd October 2019, I went to place an online order for approx. £300.00 at Next and the card was declined even though I successfully entered the One Time Password received on my mobile.

I was really confused and annoyed as the order was for a suit for me and a dress for my partner for a party we had that weekend.

I thought I would call Capital One the next day to enquire but before I found time to do this, I received a call from them on my mobile asking why I was making the transaction I was attempting to make.

I explained and the rep said that "the team" would look into this and either text or email me to let me know when the card would be okay to use.

I didn't receive a text or email so I called the next day to enquire. I was passed to someone in the security department (something like that) and he began asking me a number of questions including who I hold my mortgage with, who I bank with, whether I have a loan , whether I have any other credit cards, my age, even my star sign which completely threw me!

I answered all questions of course and was told "thank you for confirming you have not been a victim of fraud" and that I would receive a text or email telling me the "outcome of the investigation".

I was baffled as I had not mentioned fraud or been told that an investigation was taking place. The rep said nothing to clarify when I asked him to do so.

This morning, I received an email stating:

"Thank you for calling us to confirm that you did apply for a Capital One credit card.

Following a further review of your application, we are unable to offer the credit facility you have applied for.

I'm sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you. Thank you for your interest in Capital One.

Kind regards,

Darren Carlile

Head of Customer Operations"

I would very much appreciate any information to help me understand what may have happened here and what I should do next if anything as I used the card a few times and this happens.

Many thanks,

Gee

Yes Indeed Andy

Maybe I can explain. So they approved you then cancelled the credit agreement. This will be part KYC Checks. These are done at application stage and then after that periodically.

Something has thrown them. Even worse, I suspect that you might have difficulties going forward. Knowing KYC - I suspect that you need to check in with each Credit Reference Agency and also send a SAR Request to CIFAS

You can do this online.

Find out more about what the companies hold on you.

Also SAR Cap One - Collate and then come back here.
