Broken Gas Boiler

Mum and dad just had to pay for a new gas boiler replacing a Main HE that was only 4 years old.

 

Nothing wrong with the boiler as such just the flow pipe (I think that's what it's called) was faulty and could not be removed, hence completely new boiler!

 

Obviously out of warranty but is there anything that can be done?

was the old boiler regularly [annually] serviced and they still have the proof of this?

they might well have a reasonable case against the company that sold it to them under CPA rules [6yrs]

 

however if it was just a case of a blockage, then no.

what many people dont know is when the demad for gas makes the supply pressure to the boiler drop below a certain level it will fails safe.

Now the easiest cure for this is to create a reservoir of gas be replacing some fo the pipework with a larger bore so you get an increased volume of gas in the pipe at the same pressure and that keeps the boiler alight when you turn on the oven for example.

 

Sounds like they have just been ripped off by someone wanting to profit from a new installation.

The bigger bore pipe doesnt have to be at the boiler end, just after any junction or spur to other equipment. How much bigger pipe is needed will depend upon the rating of the boiler, length of run and the total power output of all the other appliances. i had to stick in a bit of 32mm pipe about 2m long to get round the problem with a new boiler but at my previous address it was replacing almost all of it.

 

You can look up how to do the sums online but your gas installer should have known this

 

warranty on boiler typically 10 yrs so definitely a casue for investigation/complaint
