I thought I'd start a separate thread rather than add this to the Article 50 thread.

Sky have just announced that they've cancelled tomorrow's planned TV debate because Boris [Johnson] is refusing to take part.

So it looks as if he's avoiding media scrutiny which would allow the public can see the two men who have been nominated for the Tory party to vote on. About 20,000 Tory supporters are going to hustings when I last saw a figure, but I assume the rest of the 120-160,000 members won't be able to see the contenders discussing their policies.

It sounds a bit odd to me.

How on earth is he going to face 27 hostile leaders across the negotiating table if he can't face Jeremy Hunt on Sky News?

Boris seems to have hit the media, possibly through being embarrassed by Hunt's comments about being a coward and so on. It doesn't seem to be going all that well so far, but he's brought in some election professionals.

I think Hunt's team thought up the best hashtag so far, #BoJoNoShow. :)

Average of last General Election voting intention polls over the last month Labour 26%, Tories 24%, Brexit 20%, Lib Dems 18%.

Due to our crazy voting system this still gives the Brexit party zero MP's, but leaves Labour just 46 seats short of a majority.  The Lib Dems on 18% massively increase their seats, to 48, meaning that right now Labour / Lib Dem, Plaid Cymru or a Labour / SNP coalition is the most likely outcome of a Gen elex.

This is why they are so so desperate to appear tough on Brexit and bring the BP voters back into the fold, or they lose the election.

Could this possibly be why he's so keen on the idea of a no deal Brexit?

I'd believe so except it would require a degree of self-awareness, an admittance of his failings - so maybe not.

Its the only way he can escape not having to totally fail on delivering on his lies.

He has a better chance of blaming everything and anyone else after having 'delivered what the people voted for'

- rather than delivering on all the failed assurances he and his leave campaign have continues to spin.

I have no doubts whatsoever he will hard Brexit at any cost - unless the EU give him his cake and eat it - which they wont.

- it is in his interests to leave in covering/blurring his lies.

else he would be on the spot to deliver.

From what I've read today, Boris is planning to blame Europe when it all goes pear-shaped. But they seem to be aware of this and hopefully they can avoid taking the blame.

Hmm maybe that would work / maybe it wouldn't.  I think a lot depends on how bad things get in the event of a 'no deal'.

If the news coverage suddenly shifts to huge price rises , mass disruption, and layoffs, then I would imagine the scrutiny will shift to how well the government is coping, and that blaming Europe will only cut so much mustard.

lets all remember who he is intending to sell this 'its all the EU's fault too ...

the idots who for some strange reason think he isnt unfit for any responsible position. and think he is talking sense.

If they believe that, they will believe anything.

I think we can all look forward to the shortest serving PM in history if he gets in.

Trouble is, a general election probably wont get us much better.

All we can hope for is a minority government propped up by the libdems - and lets hope they don't make the same mistake twice.

The libdems need to learn from the DUP and realise a small supporting party can largely run the roost in a limited number of areas that matter to them - as long as they are firm and hard enough.

Jeremy Hunt certainly knows how to put his foot in it by disrespecting our Armed Forces more specifically Northern Ireland Veterans and IRA Terrorists are treated the same

For any serving MP to say our veterans should be treated the same as terrorists is shameful

So this man wants to be our next PM making statements like that where he will be sending our Armed Forces into Conflict Zones with our loyal service members wondering if there back is covered by those pen pushers in No10.

So Boris wants to increase government borrowing to help fund tax cuts for higher earners and JH will be happy to tell businesses who go bust from a no deal Brexit that the sacrifice is worth it. Perfect.

So, either a Johnson ERG Tory/Brexit party coalition (why Boris might not be afraid of a general election) with Farage as deputy PM/senior minister

or a labour reluctant libdem coalition

after a Sept general election,

or (sounds like) Hunt

with Labour and Tory defections to other parties

A handful of Labour to the Brexit Party, more to the Libdems.

Corbyn gripping onto the Brexit doors for grim death against the whole Labour establishment now.

Long past the stage where you could trust Corbyn any more than you can Johnson.

The only difference is Johnson is clearly very happy to lie through his teeth, Corbyn will just obfuscate and avoid - but the result is the same

- both will claim - I didn't mean that - YOU misunderstood.

How is a Brexit Party / Tory Coalition worth anything, when even 23% only gives the BP 1 MP.  And remember Labour only have to shift the % age votes a tiny amount to be the largest party in a hung parliament. Our electoral system right now favours the Labour and the Lib Dems.

Although I hope what you say remains the case,

Just imagine Farage working with Johnson and agreeing a non aggression pact

Don't forget many Tory party activists seem to be refusing to campaign on anything other than hard  brexit

The polls show labour as potentially 4th in a general election, and with moderates at risk of de-selection by comrade corbyn, a jump to the Libdems would seem to be their best option.

Similarly with moderate Tories who may not be de-selected, but may lose their seats anyway.

Lets never forget that whatever else is happening - the majority of MP's want to keep their cushy well paid, inflation proof seats, and high risk of lost seat may tip them where conscience and sanity wouldn't.

The hard core of Brexiters will stay hard core - and its enough to make a difference with the weakness of Trot labour and Erg Cons.

The ERG hard right Tories and the Brexit Party are natural allies.

Quite a few commentators think that having Boris as PM could lead to a GE fairly quickly.

I wouldn't be unhappy if he's the shortest serving PM ever, I think he's totally unsuited for the role.
