How can I tell if my mobile has been infected other then a warning sign on the screen which after all could be a warning from any one encouraging me to download something that could do even greater damage ?.

99.9% of the time those warnings are fake and if you click on any link, you will end up having more problems.

Suggest you disconnect from any network and refresh your phone by your normal method. Turn off the phone, go into settings and clean out the data etc.

We could do with some help from you.

Thanks for that, I don't tend to click on links, seems there is corruption every where.

What type of a phone is it?

In general both standard Apple & Android is fairly secure, it starts to become a problem if you unlock the operating system and install apps outside of the intended app store.

If it is Android you can get the normal PC type virus checkers that would offer more protection if you feel the need, personally I just watch which sites I go to and don't open suspicious email links or attachments
