Public Health England (PHE) researchers attempting to pinpoint a link between 60 people with hepatitis E (HEV) found that they had all eaten own-brand sausages and ready-to-eat sliced ham from an unnamed retailer known as Supermarket X, The Times reported. The research was carried out between 2014 and 2016.

A percentage of meat will carry infections. If humans were in the food chain, some would be infected.

 

People just need to make sure they take precautions. Store food in fridge/freezer in accordance with advice shown on packaging or look it up if bought from butchers. Don't keep raw meat products uncovered in fridges, where you have cooked meats or uncovered foods. If you take meat out of fridge to reach room temperature before cooking or to defrost, make sure it is not going to contaminate kitchen surfaces or other foods. Do not wash meats before cooking under a running tap, as that just spreads any bacteria. Cook meats properly in accordance with instructions on packaging or refer to advice.

 

When i cook sausages, i do so in a pan over a low heat for 20-30 minutes, turning about every 5 minutes. Browning on the outside does not mean they are cooked. The fat should be boiling out of sausages and meat steaming hot. Cut into the middle of a sausage to inspect that it is cooked before eating.

 

I grew up in family where you learnt to cook and were interested in knowing the basics. A lot of people have grown up eating microwave meals or takeaways. They are therefore clueless when handling raw meat products. If you eat meat that is not properly cooked, you might well become ill.
