Grenfell fire: Council leader quits over fire response

Kensington and Chelsea Council leader Nick Paget-Brown has resigned following continued criticism of the council's handling of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

Mr Paget-Brown faced calls to resign from London Mayor Sadiq Khan and a number of other senior politicians.

It comes after an aborted meeting of the council's cabinet in which leaders had tried to ban members of the public and press.

At least 80 people are believed to have died in the blaze on 14 June.

The government is facing calls to formally take control of Kensington and Chelsea council after its Tory leader said he and his deputy would step down amid criticism over the local authority’s response to the Grenfell Tower disaster.

London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, was backed by shadow communities secretary Andrew Gwynne on Saturday in calling for commissioners to be appointed to run the embattled council.

Khan said commissioners could step in until local elections are held and act in the best interests of residents “who quite rightly feel desperately neglected”. The government had no option but to appoint “untainted” leaders who had “a genuine empathy for local people and the situation they face”, he added.

Labour backed Khan’s call, saying oversight of long subcontracting chains and checks and accountability for outsourced services like housing had failed.

I wonder who the Mayor of London has in mind to run the Council now ? More jobs for the boys ?

Fire Safety Conference 2017: Fire Minister’s speech

Fire Service Minister Nick Hurd gave a speech at the annual fire safety conference, reflecting on the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

This is a good time for experts on fire safety from across the country to gather in the same room and have a conversation about what we need to change.

This is a room full of experts, I am not one. I just happen to be the man who is Minister for the police and the fire service.

On day 2 of my service in that role, we all woke up to the Grenfell Tower tragedy and I think it is important to get that into perspective, that we are dealing with, in terms of loss of life, the biggest disaster that has hit this country since Hillsborough and a scale of fire that arguably we haven’t seen since the Second World War. We are talking about an individual fire, which Commissioner Cotton, as I stood alongside her on that fateful morning said, was a fire unlike any she had seen in her 29 years of service. I hope you’ll allow me just to take a few moments to reflect on that tragedy because obviously it changes everything.

I’m sure everyone in this room feels like me in terms of the way our hearts go out to the victims of that tragedy. They are victims because this should not have happened. Whether they have lost loved ones or whether they are still waiting to hear whether they’ve lost loved ones, which is the case for many, or whether they’ve lost everything which many of them have or whether they’ve been in a situation where they’ve had to see and hear things that people should never have to. That goes for the residents but also for the firefighters who arrived within minutes at that scene and took some very big decisions in terms of the risks they were prepared to take to go into that building and to save 65 people. It of course wasn’t just the firefighters on the scene, we should also remember the people that were not at the building but who were on the end of a phone line, listening to people in the hours of growing desperation and despair and the ripples of trauma from this event go very wide.

Immigration 'amnesty' for Grenfell fire residents

Foreign nationals directly affected by the Grenfell Tower fire are to be allowed to stay in the UK for 12 months regardless of their immigration status.

The Home Office said it would not conduct immigration checks on survivors and those coming forward with information.

Labour called for a wider "amnesty".

Meanwhile, ministers have ordered a taskforce to help run Kensington and Chelsea Council, which has faced heavy criticism for its handling of disaster.

The specialist team will take over the running of key services, including housing and the longer term recovery of the area in North Kensington.

and while the British government waffles, avoids and obfuscates, American shareholders sue Arconic over loss of earnings

http://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-arconic-lawsuit-idUKKBN19Y2U3

"In his proposed class-action complaint, Michael Brave is seeking to recoup "significant" shareholder losses stemming from Arconic's failure prior to the June 14 blaze to properly disclose its use of "highly flammable" Reynobond PE panels."

"Arconic's share price fell 21 percent between June 14 and June 27, the day after the company once known as Alcoa said it would stop selling the panels for use in high-rises. "

"It is common for shareholders to sue companies in the United States over unexpected stock price declines that they believe could have been averted."

London Fire Brigade advised on Grenfell refurbishment

The London Fire Brigade was closely consulted over the refurbishment of Grenfell Tower that included the installation of flammable cladding, the BBC has learned.

Documents seen by the BBC say there was "close liaison" between the fire brigade and the Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation (TMO).

Firefighters were shown the "fire safety features of the building".

A fire brigade spokesman said it did not "sign off" the refurbishment.

The fire brigade's role in the refurbishment, which was completed in July 2016, would be covered by the public inquiry into the disaster, he said.

Police believe at least 80 people died when the tower was engulfed in fire on 14 June.

The fire started in a fridge-freezer, but the cladding and insulation surrounding the building following a refurbishment has also come under scrutiny, with experts saying a more fire-resistant type could have been used.

Robert Atkinson, the leader of the Labour opposition group on Kensington and Chelsea Council, said he was "completely gobsmacked" by the revelation of the brigade's involvement in the refurbishment, adding: "I find this absolutely extraordinary and potentially very important.

London Fire Brigade advised on Grenfell refurbishment

READ MORE HERE: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-40938697

I was gobsmacked when I read this, particularly with terms such as signed off and advised

.. so I read it a little harder and looked for more detail which was a in few lines hidden away at the bottom

"The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said it did not "sign off" the refurbishment - adding that its legal powers limit the service to act only on "internal fire safety problems such as compromised fire doors and combustible materials on staircases".A spokesman said:

"While firefighters regularly visit local buildings to familiarise themselves with the layout and the firefighting equipment such as hydrants, this is not the same as making a detailed inspection of a building refurbishment especially when many of the changes would sit outside of our powers."

Well we are talking about the BBC and suchlike

interesting thats it not on the frontage of the guardian (yet at least)

This seems a more 'honest' report and headline

http://home.bt.com/news/uk-news/london-fire-brigade-liaised-with-grenfell-management-during-renovation-reports-11364204485513

"London Fire Brigade has denied it signed off the refurbishment of Grenfell Tower amid reports the service was consulted over renovation works before the devastating blaze. "

...

So perhaps 'signed off' on documents that said the materials used were stated to have met fire standards

and 'advised' that materials which met requirements should be used might be more honest reporting

we shall see - maybe ..

Fire chief criticises terms of inquiry into Grenfell Tower blaze

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/aug/16/grenfell-tower-inquiry-moore-bick-fire-brigades-union

"Investigation under Martin Moore-Bick seems designed to protect Whitehall from scrutiny, says head of Fire Brigades Union"

"The FBU argued for a broader inquiry, including a consideration of the advice given to, and actions taken by, government ministers. "

"“The risk in Moore-Bick’s terms of reference is that the inquiry is able to avoid probing deeper to examine the regime which allowed these deaths to happen, conveniently taking the spotlight off government ministers and any policies that were or weren’t in place that may have had an impact.”"

That's not a huge surprise really, is it? Downing Street seem to have been trying to control the inquiry from the beginning. I favour the idea of a parallel inquiry that the judge suggested, to delve into other issues. That way, his inquiry can reach conclusions fairly quickly and make recommendations for people's safety, etc. If it has to consider everything, it could take ages.

I think this is the way I would want it dealt with as well, HB.

It is shocking that so many of those affected are still living in temporary accommodation.

Blaze like Grenfell Tower could happen again, London fire chief Dany Cotton says

Six months after the tragedy, Dany Cotton tells Sky News she is "staggered" more public buildings don't have sprinkler systems.

London Fire Brigade Commissioner Dany Cotton has said she can't be sure a disaster like the Grenfell Tower blaze "wouldn't happen again".

The fire chief told Sky News the building "should never have behaved like that in a fire situation", adding: "I would never be able to say it won't happen again, I just hope and pray it never does".

She went on to say: "I'm staggered we don't have sprinklers in domestic premises and schools. They save lives. They keep people safe, as well as putting the fire out."

Six months after the fire that killed 71 people, including an unborn baby, a public inquiry has now begun with a preliminary hearing providing information about the time frame and structure of the investigation.
