Millions of smart meters installed in British households under the Government's flagship scheme may need to be replaced due to an IT bungle.

For the first time major energy suppliers have admitted that some of the 8 million "first generation" smart meters fitted in households are incompatible with a new nation al communications network, which links their systems to the devices.

A row has broken out after the government last night denied that the meters would need to be replaced.

Is that correct, that via smart meters,

energy companies can turn off electric supplies ?

Presume they can't do this for Gas, as for safety reasons they have to check gas appliances.

Given that smart meters are not compulsory yet,

i do wonder whether people having them installed have all of the info needed to make an informed choice.

We could do with some help from you.

I know they can in the States...it happened' accidentally '(according to the electricity supplier), it wont be long before it happens here. The particular house in Texas is all electric. If you can turn your heating on using Hive, what's to say it is not the same technology for the Smart meters here?

We had a SMART meter installed and at not time were we told that it would be incompatible with other suppliers and then become dumb if we switched suppliers. I wrote to our MP who in turn passed it onto the energy minister who in turn white washed the issue with a load of BS.
