Does a UK passport holder need at least six months left on there passport in order to travel ?.

If you have six months or less remaining on your passport, send it off for a replacement and you will get a 10y+6m passport back. There is (as I recall) a tick box to carry the outstanding months over to the new one.

That is called "renewal" by the Passport Office, rather than "replacement".

One can renew at any time, but it is only within the last 9 months that you can carry the outstanding time over : renew with more than 9 months left and you only get 9 months added on.
