Are tax credits checks random? I have received a letter entitled we need to check your tax credits, overleaf it asks for my working hours and childcare costs. They have also written to all my employers for the year and my childcare provider. Would they include details about my claim to my employers, or just simply ask for information? why would they ask for this mid-year?

Hello and welcome to CAG.

I've moved your thread to the HMRC forum where tax credit queries are dealt with and left you a link to follow.

It can happen randomly. You could also have put down an amount of hours and not reached an expected income level? You aren't alone.

Thank you, would hmrc be able to disclose personal details about myself to these third parties?

They wouldn't share information they have no need to know. They may ask for condirmation of details you've already provided in relation to them.

your employerwill be making real time returns about your tax so HMRC will be asking more questions about gross pay and any pension contributions. They wont be telling your employer anything. As for childcare provider it will be how many hours and at what rate just to make sure that you arent declaring it incorrectly. Again, they wont be telling them anything
