Easyjet is an EU carrier and the flight was flying into an EU destination. The distance is just under 3000 km.

Fog will be "exceptional circumstances" outside the airline's control, so put aside thoughts of 400 euro's compensation.

So (from the CAB website)

You have a legal right to:

  • food and drink
  • access to phone calls and emails
  • accommodation if you’re delayed overnight - and journeys between the airport and the hotel

The airline should give you vouchers to get these things at the airport. Ask someone who works for the airline if you’re not offered any help.

If they don’t give you help at the airport, keep receipts for expenses and try to claim from the airline later. Airlines only pay for ‘reasonable’ expenses - you won’t get money back for alcohol, expensive meals or luxury hotels.

We will now miss the last train back as do not arrive until 3am. Therefore will have to take a taxi.

Will this be claimable expense also?

Ask Easyjet at the airport (ideally at both ends!. Take a note of the name of the member(s) of staff who answer.

It may be easier to claim from your travel insurance (if you have it), but if not, and seek help from Easyjet (in case they can organise your ground transfer). Only take a taxi paid for by you if you have no other option : otherwise EJ will no doubt try to claim that you didn't need to do so ....

So, getting EJ to sort it will be preferable, and if you keep records of who said what, when, then if it comes to claiming you will have a stronger case.

If you walk past the queue asking for help at the EJ desk because there is a queue ... expect EJ to say "help was available, passenger chose to make their own arrangements instead"!

No - your contract with the airline is to get you to the airport. The absence of public transport at that time - or any other consequential losses caused by the delay - are not covered by Regulation 261/04. Claim on your travel insurance.
