Hi all.

Am new to the forum and was looking for some advice. Apologies for this being a bit of a long story...

I bought a Vauxhall Corsa in March this year and immediately had problems with it. It went back to the dealer with a rattling noise and they did some work on it and replaced a part of the exhaust, a heat shield and one other part. The work was done over a number of visits because nothing was sorting out the noise. In total they had the car for about 15 days (separate one day visits) and the problem wasn’t fixed. They eventually told me it was a normal noise so there was nothing else they could do.

I took it to another dealer in the same group who said it wasn’t a normal noise and engaged with Vauxhall to fix it. It needed various new engine parts, a new turbo, more exhaust work and some electrical work. This took about 3 months to do because of delays with parts. I was given an older Corsa to use while it was being fixed.

I got the car back about a week ago and after being without it for about 4 or the 7 months we have owned it. I spoke to Vauxhall who said they can’t give compensation but offered a 3 year service plan as a ‘gesture of goodwill’.

I think that something more substantial would be fair since I pay about £240 a month on finance which on its own means I have paid almost £1,000 for a car I haven’t had.

Any help or suggestions on whether this is a fair offer from them or if I should be taking a different route would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks!

I would be taking it with the company that provided the PCP Finance...because in effect the car is theirs until you make the last balloon payment.

Thanks for that - I might give them a ring.

I have the car back now and am happy to keep it but just think that I am due something a bit more substantial from Vauxhall. Especially since there offer was a 'gesture of goodwill' which they would 'treat as full and final settlement of the matter'.

I personally would accept their offer as its worth quite a bit...but I would also be pressuring the Finance company for the months payments without use of the car.

Everything in writing to the Finance company...you need a paper trail and you would be wise to insert in your complaint at the appropriate point..... Consumer Rights Act 2015

If you’re having difficulties with the finance company, the Financial Conduct Authority may be able to provide some support, or at least explain your rights further.

Just a quick update on this. I had originally raised a complaint with the finance company when I was considering rejecting the car back in May. Rang them to get the reference number and told them I would be sending them a letter about a price reduction on the car. I spoke to Citizens Advice who said that I have the right to request a price reduction because the problem was not fixed at the first attempt.

Finance company said that they would discuss it but they didn't think there was anything they could do because I had a courtesy car while the repair was going on so technically I was kept mobile. Said that it was a manufacturing issue and I was better going to the dealer / manufacturer.

Citizens Advice also said that I was probably better off not accepting the offer from Vauxhall yet because it might hinder what I am asking the finance company for.

Finance company trying to pass the book back to the manufacturer then...the car is their property...their responsibility...and have taken your rmonthly payments.

Have another read of the Consumer Rights Act and dont take what the Citizens Advice state as gospel.
