Once Covid measures are removed allowing the economy to function at previous levels, that is when I would expect to see problems. Imports/exports and people transiting ports is currently at a lower level.  During the Summer/Autumn there will be a large increase in traffic through ports and with extra controls in place both sides of borders, I would expect to see significant delays. If these continue into the Winter, then I predict major problems for Government and companies. Brexit then becomes a difficult decision to remain positive about as people suffer the consequences.

What has to be remembered is that during Covid lockdown and restrictions, there has been less consumer demand for some goods. Also companies will have had large warehouses full of goods that were ordered and shipped along time ago, so that is what has been satisfying much of current demand.

With factories in most countries including China producing fewer goods due to Covid restrictions, it is going to take time for production to catch up with growing demand and  therefore consumers are going to see increasing out of stock notices in stores. With increased costs of exporting to the UK and delays at borders, arguably this will make it more difficult for both companies and consumers.

From Will Hutton on Twitter. 'This is Orwellian - an ad in today’s Sunday papers. It will take at least five years for additional sales of food and drink to Japan to compensate for food and drink sales lost to the EU in January alone. Taxpayers should not be paying for such rank disinformation. Its propaganda'

Will Hutton is one of my favourite economic journalists, as he tends to be spot on with the commentary he produces on most issues.

I honestly think Brexiteers were arrogant enough to believe that Britain had some special appeal to countries around the world, where if we asked for a Trade deal they would be giving it priority. But this forgets that trade with Britain in most cases is pretty small and there are other ongoing trade negotiations which may be more important. For example Japan have been involved in Asia Pacific Trade deals, therefore any deals with UK will be pretty limited.

Will Hutton is a good commentator, I agree, UB. Bright man. Andrew Adonis also commented on this advert, called it delusional and asked what it's costing.

I suppose at least it's clear it's advertising compared with the paid for 'articles' that were in Brexit supporting papers a couple of weeks ago, showing firms that were said to be doing well under the new import/export rules. At least one of the companies quoted isn't quite quite what it seems.

On a different topic, liberal commentators are concerned about the bill being debated in the Commons tomorrow, which includes police powers and could stop peaceful demonstrations. After the demo problems at the weekend, Labour are no longer abstaining, they will vote against.

David Allen Green [FT] has written about it in his blog today.

As pointed out in a number of articles:

"Theresa May's government published a series of papers — some updated under her successor — advising UK citizens and businesses on the consequences and how to prepare for no-deal. It said the EU would treat the UK as a "third country"."

.. Although the UK gov has withdrawn many of the linked stuff with the claim it was 'out of date', when anyone who read them will realise that they are 'bang up to date'

This is quite scary but not that surprising, David Allen Green today on the lack of checks and balances on the government. Bit by bit they're dismantling anything that can challenge them.

Is this why they didn't want the ECJ and other safeguards?

You will be waiting a long time @tobyjugg2

Trade negotiations of any significance take years to be agreed and there are so many ongoing issues that have to be faced, such as fluctuating costs including exchange rates, raw materials, shipping costs.

I honestly think that Brexiteers see Britain as a central hub for world trading, where the mighty City of London financial centre is the beating heart.  But this forgets that New York, Shanghai, Frankfurt, Paris etc are in competition with London and I don't think UK Government has the financial means to make London the most competitive option available.

Oh, and who will Johnson and Raab SEEK to trade with?

https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/raab-trade-deals-human-rights_uk_6050d75bc5b605256ebeaca6

"Dominic Raab has told officials in a leaked video call that Britain will seek trade deals with countries around the world that violate international standards on human rights.

The foreign secretary told staff in his department that only trading with countries that meet European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) standards would mean the UK missing out on trade with future “growth markets”."

An entirely unconfirmed rumour stated that a minister involved was overheard saying 'We have got some way to go before the end of this parliament to ensure that UK citizens rights drop to the levels of our prospective trading partners'

I'm not so sure those others will be interested in lowering their standards enough to work with Johnson and Raab, particularly as "unrepentant and inveterate liar" Johnson simply can't be trusted to honour deals made anyway

Absolutely HB - it was the major intent of Brexit as I've said many times

- trash workers, environmental, human and civil rights and protections and put the 'law' in the hands of the Ruling Party executive.

I think we'll see some real shifts of power with Biden developing links with the EU rather than the UK

extra UK nukes are no use to the USA they've got thousands, they need boots on the ground and political clout - both of which the UK is fast running short on.
