I was caught stealing at tk maxx today. It was a very foolish thing of me I admit.

Something that costed £7.99 and I didn't want to pay for it as I had already purchase worth £70.01 at tk maxx

and didn't have enough money for what I wanted.

I took of the security plastic tag off the box and put the item in my bag

while I got busy with my daughter as she was crying and kicking a fuss.

I continued to checkout with all my other items amounting to £70!

Then left the premises.

A security came running down the stairs and spoke to me

saying I believe you have something in your bag which you haven't paid for.

I said ok let's check I opened my bag and saw the item then remembered I put it in my bag.

I forgot about it as I spent nearly 2hours in the store looking for lots of things.

He escorted me to the back security room and asked me to place everything not paid for on the table.

I then placed the only item that was in my bag worth £7.99!!

He asked me did you steal the item.

I said I didn't mean to

they were so rude and shouting.

He then said

look I'm calling the police and I cannot wait for that woman to tell me.

Then I was obliged to say I stole it so that he doesn't call the police.

Then he cut off the phone and said to me if I admit I stole it

I said yes and started talking again

he was angry saying that I'm fed up now I'm calling the police cause you're not ready to tell me.

Then said that how are you going to explain to your partner if I call the social services

because you stole £7 your daughter got taken away!!

I stayed quiet and didn't wana say anything so they don't call the police.

Now reading other threads I guess there will be a letter coming for me to pay for god knows what

because the item was left un damaged.

Shall I tell my partner I'm scared.

I do not work to pay off any money to anyone.

Please help me.

They took my ID CARD with my details on it

.

And forced me to take my provisional license out of my wallet to show my address.

You really need to report that to their head office and the security company. Do you have proof?

It also seems that tk maxx security have somewhat of a degree of xenophobia and almost racism going on as a matter of course.

Hi and welcome to CAG.

Whatever the reason the item ended up in your bag is neither here nor there. We are here to help with the aftermath.

Firstly, the security staff have no right to force you to show any ID at all, Only the police can do that and it is they that should have dealt with this, not the security staff who have no idea what they are doing. In fact, they couldn't have even forced you into one of their hidden rooms. Anyhoo that is past now so forget that bit.

I would tell your partner what happened and although he will be upset, any reasonable person will help. If you are in a violent or controlling environment then I feel nothing should be said but if your partner is OK then this thread can be shown with the ACCURATE advice that follows.

Within 2-3 weeks you will get a demand from RLP (Retail Loss Prevention) demanding x sum for the act. They will state that this is for security time and extra admin involved.

Total rubbish of course.

The most they could ever claim for is a small admin fee as the security staff are paid whether or not they apprehend anyone.

You are quite safe to ignore these missives. they will carry on for some time unfortunately as RLP are dogs with bones. Once they have exhausted the letters, they will pass this on to a pet debt collector who have as much power as I have...NONE so you can ignore them too.

Stay strong, don't fall for the BS and for pities sake, don't get into this situation again!

Yes I am totally ashamed of what I've done

They've told me if I do not pay

police will show up at my doors and the amount will escalate to high courts.

Also they've told me anywhere I travel around the world will know that I have committed a crime if I do not pay

and I cannot travel as they will arrest me right away!! Is that true??

I'm scared.

Also police wasn't contacted but will it be on my enhanced DBS check as I have one currently being done

so I can't find a job in work sector with children.

I'm so stupid but what's done is done

now I need to know what to do next.

And what about the social services will they be getting involved??

Oh dear me, the lies people tell. The police were not involved therefore no one will know about this. There will be no evidence on any DBS check as the police were not involved. You will not be arrested over this. The ONLY people that will know anything about this is TKMaxx and RLP. No police. No Social Services and even no courts.

RLP do not do court aver since they got a severe slapping in 2012. As it is TKMaxx would have to instigate court action and they cannot be bothered hence their passing this on to RLP.

Please read as many threads on RLP and TKMaxx as possible. There are quite a few and see what happened in those cases. Basically, nothing. I will pop a few links in for you to read shortly.

It's too late for them to involve police, and as above ignore RLP they have no power. As to their alleged Dishonesty database they threaten to put people on, it is likely non Data Protection Act compliant.

I've seen others posts.

Some police have turned up at their doors and some have lost their jobs due to tk maxx calling their work place

and issuing a police report straight to their work place.

I'm scared if I travel it comes onto my records as they've told me that as soon as my passport is scanned

it will show up if I haven't paid my debts and also shows that I've committed a crime.

I'm quite scared to tell my partner he will be very upset at me for that :

/ and I do not know what he will be thinking and it's sometimes something that will stay in his mind like

"you're a thief" and might often come back at me again and again

I think I'd rather not tell him.

About the RLP letter can I send it back as moved out the address?

Will they be tracing me?

Please read the info you have been given. No police will be involved, nobody will turn up at your door, no court action will happen. No markers will be on your passport.

I don't know who told you they will but those people are flat out lying

I agree with Renegade, this isn't how things happen. You haven't been arrested and anyway being debt isn't a crime.

Where have you read what you put in post #9 please?

Debts I mean the money that retail prevention loss will send me which God know how much will amount up to -.

-' I do not work also I do not what anything to affect me with finding a job in childcare sector.

I have lost the links to where I've read them

but definitely I've read lots of theft threads at tk maxx on this website.

That's the reason I'm scared

also the letters will keep coming through I do not want my partner to see them.

Shall I pay it off and finish with and not have the hassle of receiving tonnes of letters and what if it escalates to court.

And what if then the police gets involved?

And what if tk maxx gets involved.

I could be in more trouble?

I hope it's not an outrageous amount of money.

I'm waiting for the letter to come now, the incident happened yesterday -.-'

There was one case I remember where the police turned up twice asking for the person to contact them and I remember one post where a store contacted an employer and that person lost their job however that store was in breach of the Data Protection Act.

If TKMaxx did that to you, they would be in deep trouble as they have disclosed personal information which they have no right to do.

To be clear. The police were not involved at the time so they won't be in the future. It will,NOT escalate to the court. I will post up the relevant judgement soon where a retailer (not allowed to name them) lost the case and that was after the retailer and RLP sent their best and brightest to court so do not worry about that. It will not happen.

The letters. Yes there are going to be a few of them. Nothing you can do to stop that unless you have an alternative address you can get them sent to. It is your choice whether to tell your partner or not but I can see from the way you are typing, you are worried of the consequences. Dependant on the type of relationship should dictate whether on not to confess. Your partner will have already seen a change in you as you are worried.

If you tell your partner and then show him(?) this thread and the others posted here, he will be able to see for himself that RLP have absolutely no power to demand anything and they won't go to court.

Pay or not to pay. We on CAG will always say not to as these demands are unlawful but at the end of the day only you can make that choice.

Would you pay me for the time I have taken to post this? Of course not. The same applies to RLP. It's a numbers game to them.

Also, if their business was legitimate, why do they hide behind a mailbox address and not their real one?

This is a short version of the judgement mentioned above

If they did, and you lost your job, you would be entitled to sue TK Maxx for the loss of earnings etc caused by their breach of the Data Protection Act, independent of any Criminal action the Information Commissioners Office tokk against TK Maxx for the breach.

As SF says there will be letters but RLP have no powers, so ignore them.

I have been on CAG for 8 years and never in that time have I heard that anyone was rejected for a job based on this so called 'offender database' They would find it difficult to defend if they ever did so. You have not been convicted of any crime so anything on their database can ONLY be an allegation. Even if the police did attend and gave you a fixed penalty notice, that is not an admission of guilt.

Also, no employer can access this database without your express written permission. All an employer will do is contact th police for a DBS check if one is needed and there will be nothing on there to show about this incident as the police were not involved.

It's the same with visa's A couple of CAGgers were worried that they wouldn't get their visa extended due to their actions. We put their minds at rest and they got the visa extension with no trouble whatsoever. If this doesn't show what a bunch of ***** RLP are then nothing will.

With your letter, Take a digital picture, copy it to your PC then edit out the personal details, convert it to a pdf file then upload it.
