My son took out tesco box insurance 6 months ago and pays monthly. He originally stated his annual mileage as 6000. Due to a change in his circumstances he needs to increase his annual mileage as he has moved to a new area and has had a change in his shift pattern that requires daily travel to snd from his place of work when previously he had a lift with another person in their car. He contacted tesco and explained he needed to increase his mileage and was told that he would have to purchase top up miles costing £125 for a 1000 miles......is this correct ??? please advise

I don't know if the figure is correct, but the concept is.

The premium quoted was dependant on the risk which is affected by the mileage. Changed mileage -> new risk -> new premium.

If you had house insurance and it was for a house in an area with low rates for burglaries and you moved to an area with a high rate of burglaries : you'd expect your premium to increase.

More risk of an incident.

Same (more risk of an incident with a young driver doing increased mileage).

Sounds correct.

Shop around when the policy is due for renewal, based on the new mileage required.

We could do with some help from you.

tesco has now said that if my son chooses not to purchase top up miles then the.policy will be cancelled once 6000 miles are reached....This is my sons 1st policy and he is fast approaching 5000 miles already and still has another 5th left until renewal is due meaning that he won't get any NCB and have wasted 7 months with tesco box insurance ....

problem with these offers, exceed and pay more, that is the chance you take afraid! same as a alot of broadband deals exceed then you pay for excess use, that is why a full insurance cover (normal) better for most people, situations can change anytime within a year, same as broadband get unlimited cover that will cover any excess use already paid for.

you pay your money albeit cheaper policy but situation changes then you are liable to pay more afraid. a chance you take.
