Something came to my attention yesterday.Better just start this off.Shocked me.

There are currently 3.7 million children living in poverty in the UK. That’s over a quarter of all children. 1.7 million of these children are living in severe poverty. . In the UK 63% of children living in poverty are in a family where someone works.

 

The Government has a statutory requirement, enshrined in the Child Poverty Act 2010, to end child poverty by 2020. However, it is predicated that by 2020/21 another 1 million children will be pushed into poverty as a result of the Coalition Government’s policies.

I have read 43% of Children in Manchester do not have a hot meal,repeated across many areas very worrying.

 

Well i have started this thread about child poverty not knowing much about this problem.

 

What is it like in your area.And have your say.I had not realised there was such a big problem out there.

If you have links to back up your point all the better.

In Manchester i have noticed a lady trying to raise a few pounds from local businesses to provide a few hot meals in Salford for children.

Seems a good idea.Could make a big difference repeated across the country.

I see there are many different ways of measuring poverty.And i understand people have different views on this.

Such as relative poverty and absolute poverty.

Could you possibly put some links on to back up your views.I would like to look at all the facts.

Well,i am beginning to look closely at child poverty in the uk.

But am struggling to find articles giving figures for 2015 or early 2016.Trying to find out if there have been some improvements.

Can find some for 2014 but there must be more somewhere.Up to date.

Particularly for the cities.

If you see any could you post them.

I want to know what is happening out there.

Sorry for taking so long to answer Consumer Dude i did read your posts.

Did you manage to link and see the info in the end.

I remember during the Payday Loan fiasco,many local authority computers started to restrict things.

More than 2,000 Boston children ‘in poverty’

 

9th March 2014

More than 2,400 children in and around Boston are classed as living in poverty according to data that is helping shape a response to the issue.

 

The figure - 2,435 in all - is provided by HM Revenue and Customs and represents the number of children living in families in receipt of out-of-work benefits or tax credits with a reported income less than 60 per cent of the national median.

 

Within the borough, the count varies from a high of 440 in Fenside (30.9 per cent of resident children) to a low of 10 for the West ward (about three per cent).

Lincolnshire among Europe's poorest areas says EU study

Around half of people living in Lincolnshire are on the financial brink.

 

The figures were released by Eurostat, the data agency of the EU have cast findings casting doubt on the strength of the county's economy.

 

Lincolnshire came ahead of just three other areas – West Wales, Cornwall and Durham and Tees Valley.

 

The study measured GDP per head in regions across the EU, taking into account the different prices in different regions.

 

The figures have come as a shock – with many residents telling the Target they did not recognise the findings.

Lincoln, Boston and Skegness named as most deprived areas in the country

Several areas of Lincolnshire have been named as one of the most deprived in the country.

 

Lincoln, Skegness, and Boston are areas have been named in the top ten percent of government poverty ratings.

 

The figures take into account how much money people earn, how healthy they are and how they can access services such as accommodation.

 

Church worker from Skegness, Alan Bailey, told BBC Radio Lincolnshire that a number of people are using food banks for different reasons.

When I first moved to the area, Boston had one of the lowest unemployment figures, nearly 20 years ago. I think this was because quite a few people were employed by farmers.

 

With the coming of gang masters bussing migrant workers from further afield to do this task and then migrants coming directly to Boston, those people who had been employed were suddenly not because the incomers were working for far less - living in caravans or sharing bedsits - even sleeping in the park toilets until they were made unavailable. !!

Defining Deprivation

 

Deprivation as a concept is both relative and subjective. For example, for someone living in one of Rio de Janeiro's shanty towns, deprivation may mean something different to someone living in one of England's many deprived coastal areas. Similarly deprivation is also subjective since the importance given to an issue or factor of deprivation by one person is likely to be of a different scale of importance to another.

The former of course will likely have no real shelter, no clean water or proper sanitation - scrubbing around rubbish dumps for food. Very likely no access to education at all.

 

The latter will probably have a poor diet, parent(s) who will have some form of income if only via benefits - with the child having at least one hot meal a day when at school (if attending).

im sorry i dont agree with the figures and like some other people said it is impression just because they dont have amobile phone etc that is not poverty , as for children not having hot meals what is the parent doing with the money the state hands over (fags booze etc) definatly for some , i tihnk people have to get thier priorities right

Learning a little as i look around with the limited time i am spending on this.

 

Public opinion is divided on whether child poverty is a problem. Nearly half, (41%) thought there was very little child poverty, while just over half (53 per cent) thought there was quite a lot of child poverty.
