British Gas Smart Meters have issued a safety warning regarding the Power Adaptor for their Smart Energy Meter.

The letter states the following;

Your energy monitor is the device that shows how much energy you're using. It is powered by an adaptor with a white lead that plugs into your wall socket.

The Manufacturer of these adaptors, has told us there may be a fault with a component in the plug, so we recommend you switch it off & unplug it.

It goes on to say, that the actual Energy Smart Meter is NOT affected & you are to keep that aside.

A replacement adaptor will be sent out within the next 8/9 weeks, along with a envelope for you to send back the old adaptor.

Once the new adaptor arrives, plug the Energy Smart Meter back in.

The letter does not state any kind of serial/part number or area, I live in Essex, so I've no idea who may be affected or not by this.

Why is it taking so long [8-9 weeks] to replace the faulty component ?

I hate to say it but it sounds like BG have used cheap adaptors often sourced from China. Have they said it is a fire hazard? I just hope they have informed every smart meter customer by post and email

I've received it by letter in the post CB.

I've no idea as to why it's going to take 8/9 weeks to replace the adaptor.

They do not mention a fire risk.

It states; there may be a fault with a component in the plug, so we recommend you switch off & unplug it.

I'll scan it in the morning & can email it to admin CB.

Strange this, we don't have a BG smart meter yet but have had exactly the same with our EDF electricity smart meter adaptor which was both CE marked and 'Made in China'.

I thought the CE Mark was a guarantee that the device complied with all relevant safety requirements so how could these faulty items have got into the distribution chain? Was a false CE Mark illegally applied to them?

MM, that article is from 2013 and I suspect there might have been a lot of amendments. However, I don't seem to be able to find anything more current.

There is a forum or blog on this and makes strange reading. I typed in smart meter faults or something like that and then saw the blog. It also has a letter from ofgem on it too..

Then something about most homes having them installed.

Having read on another search is that the suppliers can charge more during peak periods. If need be I have the last site in my history on the pc but not my mobile device..

Also not sure if allowed to post up addresses for blogs...

If I have been of any help, please click on my star and leave a note to let me know, thank you.

Just contacted my supplier OVO re if their smart meter mains plug had any warnings, according to their smart meter department they have no issues with the equipment they supply.

I've no idea as to what the fault relates to exactly. My adaptor also states Made in China with the CE marks on it.

Reading the letter it states the fault lies within a component in the adaptor itself.

I've not heard anything else back from BG, nor is this Safety notice being reported widely, as CB & myself have previously searched.

It's like it's being kept extremly quiet for some unknown reason. I'd like to know why?.

As if it's serious enough to warrant a Safety notice to stop using it until a replacement is sent out, then it should be public knowledge.
