I have just received the following email from the SLC and was wondering if I should respond ?

I left the UK in 2009 and my final default dropped off my credit report in Dec 2015.

I really dont want the SLC ruining my credit status for another 6 years.

I left university in Jan 2009 and have had no contact from the SLC until this email.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Please respond within 72 hours of receipt of this email.

Hi Unclebulgaria,

I took the loans out in 2008 and first semester of 2009.

Circa 7200 in tutition fees and 8000 in maintenance.

I have never had contact from the SLC with regards to repaying the loans and I have never deferred payment either.

Left the UK in Sept 2009 after mortgage express repossession and various other credit issues.

I have no UK address or UK bank account but am returning to the UK within the next 2 years

so don't want to cause anymore credit issues.

new style loans so cant become statute barred

so if you are over the earning thresh hold in the uk

your employer will automatically deduct payments I believe.

bottom line is they need paying unless you are close to 50?

and yes they can mark your credit file if you fall into arrears.

Given that these loans are enforceable for so long and you are returning to the UK, you really need to stay in contact with SLC. As far as I know, if you don't stay in contact, they will apply a default amount, as the current outstanding to chase and this may be subject to enforcement.

You really should complete any financial info for SLC and if necessary make the payments due. If you are not earning enough, you might be able to defer. You can't really escape this and may end up in a far worse position at some point in the future when they catch up with you.

Would suggest that you reply to SLC and advise them of your current position.

We could do with some help from you.

Hi CelicaSupra,

SLC sent out some letters following the email wanting proof of income.

I sent the evidence that they asked for and am now paying them a monthly installment.

I will add that the monthly installment is higher than I had worked out I would be repaying,

so I am in the process of asking how they came to their repayment figure with a view to getting it lowered.

  • 1 month later...

Hi again everyone,

just thought I would give you an update.

SLC decided that my payments should be 90 pounds a month, which I have begun to pay.

Having worked out repayments according to the SLC overseas threshold,

I should be paying back 36 pounds a month.

I have questioned this repayment amount on multiple occasions but have received no response

. Then I receive this wonderful email :

Dear Mr XXXX

Thank you for your recent email.

In relation to your queries regarding your Overseas Repayment Schedule, we

have passed your email to the relevant department who will respond to you

in writing in due course. Alternatively, you can contact them on

00441412433660.

You currently have a Grant Overpayment of £1347.00 and as we have been

unsuccessful in collecting this balance, your account has been passed to

Commercial Collection Services.

Please contact them as soon as possible on the below details:-

Commercial Collection Services

Email [email protected]

This is the first time I have heard of this alleged overpayment

which would be dated around Jan 2009 when I left my course.

Any advice on what to do?

I am still abroad and the SLC are not up for discussions it seems,

its like they are happy to take the money and not enter into correspondence to question payment amounts.

I am certainly not going to be dealing with Commercial Collections Service.

Anyone had dealings with this CCS?

Thanks all

Hi,

Sending a SAR to SLC should let you know the score regarding the 'overpayment'.

Don't know much about CCS...
