I was shocked to hear this on the news just now, not a fan but still a shock

David Bowie has died after an 18-month battle with cancer, the singer's son has confirmed.

Duncan Jones wrote on Twitter: "Very sorry and sad to say it's true. I'll be offline for a while. Love to all."

Statements were posted on the star's official Facebook and Twitter accounts saying the star died on Sunday.

They read: "David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer.

"While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief."

Bowie released his 29th album, called Blackstar, on Friday 8 January, to coincide with his 69th birthday.

The Starman singer was famously very private and it was not known that he was struggling with ill health.

There always appears to be periods where you get a number of top music stars or actors who die. I had forgotten that the drummer Cozy Powell died back in about 1998 aged 50. It was only a recent ceremony unveiling a plaque in his name, which reminded me.

I did not know Bowie had been struggling with cancer for the last 18 months, as he had only recently released a new album.

We could do with some help from you.

An icon of my teenage years and continued to be a favourite. An amazing and imaginative musician, actor and man.

Legend is used too often, but David Bowie really was a legend.

Ashes to ashes

Dust to dust

RIP

Bowie turned down a knighthood in 2003. “I would never have any intention of accepting anything like that,” he said. “I seriously don't know what it's for. It's not what I spent my life working for.”

I think he had previously turned down a CBE in 2000.

I had heard that his ex wife, Angie was told of his death in the big brother house, however would not she have known in advance and this could have been a publicity stunt ?

I read that she hadn't seen him for 35 years and has been estranged from their son since he was 13.

I certainly wasn't being judgemental in any case, but you would have thought that they might have put it behind em by now...

Very sad the rift they had, more so because their son got caught up in it somehow. Until the facts of the matter are known, we can only speculate why ties were severed completely. Maybe there's hope of reconciliation between mum and son one day.

From the BBC

Very sad that they wait until he has died before trashing his memory :(

Presumably they will do the same to "Sir" Elton John when he passes on as well !
