I am approaching the end of my 12 month contract with Plusnet Broadband Service.

I wrote to Plusnet to let them know I did not wish to renew the contact for another 12 months

they have e mailed to say there is a £30 cancellation charge to disconnect the Broadband Service.

I cannot find any reference to this charge in their Residential Terms and Conditions.

Can anyone advise if this £30 charge is legitimate or are they just trying it on.

I couldnt see anything in the t+c's relating to a termination charge.

What i did see is a final payment which is basically the remaining amount due under contract.

In short, if you give notice after 11 months, you will still owe the final month and will still be able to use the service until the notice expires.

Ask them for a pac code and port the number away, to a payg sim to stop them "forgetting" to actually cancel it.

The t's + c's are the same for home broadband, just ignore the pac code bit.

They charged me when I left them for a cheaper provider earlier in the year. My contract with them had ended, I gave them my notice then I ended up owing them a Cancellation Fee. I made a formal complaint to Plusnet they then cancelled the charge.

Pretty much every ISP charges this when you terminate the service rather than using a PAC code to transfer to another ADSL provider. It's a charge because someone has to go to the Exchange to actually disconnect your ADSL. I think it's £30 from all of them and I believe the charge is actually set by BT Openreach since they carry out the work at the exchange.

Thanks for the responses above. I am moving from the Uk and am unable to take up their service. I would have thought the end of contract cancellation charge should have been advised when I took out the contract with them. If I have to pay to cancel I will send in a complaint as "Blondmusic" did

Hi

Plusnet are part of BT and are similar to other companies that charge this £30 fee. Where a customer is switching to another provider a MAC code is used although the customer never sees in nowadays as the companies deal with it them selves.

Where you are cancelling a contract with no new contract elsewhere, this 'fee' becomes payable. Argue the toss with Plusnet and see where it gets you.

Hi silverfox 1961

I took out a 12month contract which is ending in a months time. I was giving them 30days notice that I would not be renewing the contract. I was not cancelling midway during a contract, the contract is ending.

I understood that. The issue is the £30. I can't see why they should be charging it in the first place. IMO it's just another money making scheme.

I was told my by current provider that you no longer need a MAC code to change broadband supplier. When I pointed this out to Plusnet they then cancelled the fee they charged me. Here is the info from U Switch regarding changes to the rules that you no longer need a MAC code

The issue here though is that the OP isn't changing provider, they're terminating the connection altogether. This requires an engineer visit to the Exchange, which is why there's a charge.

Plusnet have been charging this fee for cancellation for quite sometime so nothing new about it.

As have most providers (BT included). However, there is a way out: If you have been given notice of a price increase, you can terminate a contract without incurring a penalty fee.

Just stop paying them at the end of your contrcat-cancel the DD and inform them that you are not transferring to anone else so what they do with the bits of wire at the exchange is up to them and nothing to do with you and dont expect you to pay for it.

If you had milk delivered by Unigate you wouldnt expect them to charge you £30 for not delivering milk would you?

I cannot find anywhere in their terms about a cancellation fee.

I would ask them to to point out where exactly this term is.

I cannot see any other company apart from BT under certain circumstances making this fee either

Please contact a member of the site team if you are offered help off the forum for a a paid or no win no fee service.
