They are offering a deal because they know that they are in the wrong procedurally so will lose in an Employment Tribunal but it will cost you money to go there and you will win a month's pay. They know that there will be costs to be borne and they will end up paying a lot for incidentals and get bad publicity to boot. That is why they are offering you a deal, they have done their sums and come up with a figure that is tempting for you and cheaper than fighting a claim.

Take the 4 months and resignation offer, it will pay you more than a fight and you get a reference that says you resigned rather than one trhat says you were sacked. Also, if you go to a tribunal and win that makes many prospective employers nervous.
