Yes, That will be primarily to update the engine management software to remove the bit that reduces the fuel fed to the engine etc to fiddle the emissions results.

There will almost certainly be some other tweaks they can do to optimise the emissions/power output beyond the levels left once the fiddle is removed,

but they aren't going to be able to simply adjust a few things and get the vehicles to the power/emissions levels that were claimed - else they would have.

Either

emissions will be a lot higher,

power will be significantly lower,

or a compromise of both will be somewhat lower.

 

The cars affected could easily lose 10% power/torque/fuel consumption and still not meet the nextgen/US emission levels they claimed to meet.

 

(why fuel consumption - because the most efficient burn for power is not the best for emissions)

It matters not about the American market. The government has said that UK cars that have the device removed who do not them meet UK emission standards will 'not' be charged extra excise duty.

As this device/software is purely to reduce emissions during testing there would be no requirement to mess with anything else performance wise.

yes, but re-read my points - NEW cars sold will still be required to meet the emission standards even if existing cars on the road are exempt

.. unless the government throws away the emissions requirements on new cars sold for ALL manufacturers

 

oops - apologiess Conniff - I didn't make that point clear in the prior post although I meant to.

 

So what will the other manufacturers do when they realise their car owners are paying much higher emission based road tax for cars that actually put out less emissions?
