Car Insurance automatic renewal

My car insurance expired yesterday and I arranged cover with another provider. Today I got an email from my previous insurer telling me that my policy had been renewed. I'm going to cancel it but can they lawfully charge me "admin" charges or other fees

Car insurance automatically will renew unless you give 28 days notice on a change. It is a rolling contract the same as a mobile phone.

 

You might be better talking to your existing insurance company, tell them the quote from the second company and see if they will match it.

 

My insurance company did this to me and i received the cancelation bill three months later. That included 28 days payment and £50.00 cancellation of policy

 

All because i failed to give 28 days notice to terminate the policy/agreement at the end of the 12 month term.

You're right to be cynical but the person I spoke to was reading a script from his computer screen and said that I would be charged 0 pounds 0 pence, so I'm pretty sure I won't be charged.

Have you it in writing yet that they have fully closed down your policy?

 

The reason i say that is that when a policy is taken out or extended, commission payments are involved

Check the bank account used for payments and make sure nothing goes through. Cancel any direct debit.

 

With some companies they have outsourced premium collection and it is not unknown for payments to still go through, even when the person at the Insurers thinks nothing is going through, as they don't have the information on their screen.
