Fees for some courts could double under plans revealed by the Ministry of Justice today – the day after the House of Commons adjourned for the summer recess.

Under a consultation announced by justice minister Shailesh Vara , the maximum fee for money claims would rise from £10,000 to £20,000. Fees are currently payable on 5% of the value of a claim up to a maximum fee of £10,000.

Personal injury and clinical negligence claims will be excluded from the higher cap and fee remissions for those ‘of limited means’ will still apply.

Fees would be introduced to the property, tax and general regulatory chambers.

Fees for general applications in civil proceedings will increase from £50 to £100 for an application by consent, and from £155 to £255 for a contested application.

Fees for divorce proceedings will increase from £410 to £550.

I am not sure if fee remission applies to larger claims, though… even for someone of limited means.

Not to mention the Majority of solicitors are on a work to rule at the moment, no overtime.

The money they receive in legal aid has been drastically cut.

It is not so much their own income affected, they are more concerned that people under this Government are steadily being denied the right to seek justice. That is in violaion of our own constitution.

It is about time this Government was stopped using our own justice system as their own political play thing

I agree…it really is quite scandalous…there are so many people being denied access to justice!
