Hello all, finally got myPPI back and refund of additions account, so thank youth those who've me great advice. Now it would seem Barclays is in the discrimination game of where you live! Just got a letter (took 15 days to get to Cyprus!) informing me that because i don't have 100K in my current account and because i live in Cyprus they will close my accounts on 11 September. Just spoke to them and first information was don't worry, you use your account so ignore the letter but because i wanted that in writing i then got told this wasn't true - oh how strange!!!!!! For starters, how many customers keep 100K in their accounts?

I haven't used my UK Barclays debit card for any purchase in Cyprus (well not for 7 years anyway) i only use it to purchase items from retailers and pay bills in the UK but thats not good enough. I am now being told where i can live, how much money i have to have in my account in order o bank with them. Isn't this discrimination against other EU states ?(and yes Cyprus is in the EU)

Even better, i am returning to the UK for good as soon as my house is sold but unless I'm there before Sept 11 2015 i won't have a bank account.

I wonder what they will do when i can't pay my barclaycard bill due to not having a bank account~!

Does anyone know if this is legal or are they breaking some EU banking code. thanks for reading my rant

Hi Eaton,

Have you been using this a/c regularly.

If you have been funding the a/c, how often are fund credited.

Hello Slick123,

i use my current account on a very regular basis and it is credited with 500 Quid a month (and has been for the last 8 years)!

interestingly, when i got the letter yesterday i contacted customer service and i was told that because i use my account frequently then i wouldn't be affected. when i asked for that to be put in writing i was put through to someone else who then said i was given the wrong information! this isn't the first time I've been given wrong info and I'm not buying the "oh they havebnt been trained correctly" lie anymore. Imagine if i had taken this information for real and done nothing. Come September 11 the bank would have closed my account and basically stolen my monad to a comment in their info that says " after your account has been closed you will no longer have direct access to it"

i have submitted a complaint with them and asked them to show me when i last used my account for any purchases outside of the UK. I think they will have to go back to 2006 for that one! So in effect because i live in cyprus i must have 100K in my bank account (why?) I'm now going to have to look and see if there is any way i can give my UK based brother power of attorney to handle my bank account until i get the house sold here and return to the UK. Unfortunately i somehow don't think that will e before Sept 11! god, yet another rant, but I'm so ****ed off with their crap attitude to loyal customers

Not having "direct access" doesn't mean you have "no access"!

If your account was closed your money would be moved into a holding account.

You would have the chance to move your money prior to the closure, and you would also be informed (prior to closure) how to apply for any funds moved into a "holding account" to be transferred to you.

I "get" that you are angry, but accusing them (groundlesly) of "basically stealing" your money doesn't help : it isn't stealing (there is neither 'dishonest intent' nor 'intent to permanently deprive')

luckily for me i haven't said that to them as yet. my biggest problem is now trying to find a bank in the UK without having to actually be in the UK to open it. from what i can see most banks seem to have a minimum figure of how much money needs to be in a bank account.

No such thing as a loyal customer to a bank. They either make money out of you or they don't.

Hi Eaton

1. How long have you had this a/c and how long you've been out in Cyprus.

2. How does the bank provide statements to you, ie paperless or posted statements.

3. And how often ?

Given you absence abroad AND your intention to return to the UK soon, I think the bank's decision seems unfair.

An alternative to a formal Power of Attorney would be an Authority to Act, where your brother is acknowledged by the bank to act on your behalf. However, it's may be difficult to set this up while you're absent from the UK.

I think your best option is to complain in writing (by email) to Barclays HQ saying the decision to close the a/c will compromise you badly. Tell them you are selling your Cyprus home with the intention of returning to the UK permanently by xxdate.

You could also ask if you can change the address of the a/c to your brother's until you return.

Dear Slick, apologies for not replying sooner, loads of problems.

According to the SAR report i have had the Additions Platinum account since 1984

i can't remember the last time i got a statement from them but i do everything online and can view all statements there.

I have complained to them and a bank rep called me back. i told her i was selling up and moving back to the UK as soon as possible. She told me someone would contact me within 5 days (today). Strange though when i was asked if they could offer me compensation for having to call them and speak for 1hr i refused the compensation yet i noticed they have added 50 pounds to my account under the heading Apologies RTB.

I have looked at several banks in the UK but you either need to have over 500 pounds going in every month but more importantly you need to provide a UK address, utility bills etc. Im at a loss here, i can't provide that as i haven't yet got back to the UK. Everything depends on the sale of my house here in cyprus, my divorce settlement, and when i actually get back to the UK. I did tell the lady i spoke to that she could contact my lawyer in the UK to confirm my intention of returning to the uk but as yet Barclays have not been in touch with her.

I think the only route i have left is to get a power of attorney but will that mean that even though my brother is in charge of my account, all details including change of address of my account will be going to him until i return to the UK? If thats the case then I'm fine with that but will they be able to argue that?

many thanks

hello B

solicitor probably would but you can't change your address online - you have to go into branch in UK with documentation etc. so no go there. Cant really afford to fly to UK and haven't got a utility bill anyway so i can only see POA as the way to go.

With your a/c open since 1984, you have every right to argue that they should keep your a/c open, particularly as you intend to return to the UK.

Do you have a timeline for your return yet ?

Unfortunately not. cyprus is not the best place to sell your house at the moment. Just got a letter from Barclays telling me its nothing personal but they're still going to close the account but now they have extended the deadline till 28 November! Oh, and strangely enough no offer of help anymore to find a new bank.

I have nothing to lose now so I've written to ombudsman????? complaining that Barclays are discriminating against us poorer account holders and if its not personal then why allow accounts to stay open if you have the odd 100 grand to spare. Sounds pretty discriminatory to me. doubt it'll go anywhere but might as well try. Hey Ho

Hi Eaton,

Do you know if the bank would allow your a/c to remain open IF you are back in the UK before the deadline.

Or are they closing it in any event.

Hello

sent a reply to your question via my iPad but can't see it so will answer now.

As far as i am aware i would still have my current account in use as long as i lived in the UK or another country as long as it wasn't on their list (no information about which countries are on this list by the way). I don't know if they would have told me my current account would have been closed in any event but possibly it would have something to do with being in credit and having no overdraft facility, I'm not a good candidate for a current account. Barclays has been less than truthful with their reasoning and to rub salt into the wounds i find it remarkable that they tell me this is nothing to do with me personally - its just a commercial decision. Doyou know if you have a current account with Barclays in the UK one of the criteria is you must have 100K in that account?

The £100k bit is some Banking convention related to UK accounts used by people living outside of the UK. If you have £100k +, you qualify for an international account, which some are held in the Channel Islands. They even provide a personal bank manager you can contact.

My instinct is that it is UK government/Bank of England controls. They don't want UK Banks being used by too many people living abroad, to make it easier to manage accounts for money laundering/terrorism checks. Having to have £100k+ in accounts and checks on those accounts restricts it to a smaller number, so easier to manage.

What i think you should do is contact HSBC local to where you live and see what they suggest. They are probably the best Bank in these circumstances. But given their recent issues, they may have tightened their procedures. You might be able to have 2 accounts with them. One in Cypus and another set up ready for your return to the UK.

Hi Eaton,

As it's your intention to return to the UK in the near future, why not just use a relative's address (or someone else you trust) temporarily.

You may be unable to open an a/c with another bank until you have proof of your address in the form of utility bills, etc.

:-)

Still can't understand why they have given me extra couple of months because if they can do that why can't they wait till i get back. Where do they think i was going to put the proceeds of the house sale - oh that would have been my current bank account then! sorry, cynical old me!
